The time of the United States 1 circuit court was occupied ail of Monday and Tuesday in hearing the case of Neal vs. J. H. Foster, John A. and Wm. Crawford, of Albany. Briefly stated, the case is about as follows : In February, 1883, Foster was the owner of the Magnolia mill in Albany, and by a fall in the market he was supposed to have lost about $30,000 on flour at sea and in .Portland. He was also supposed to be short 20,000 bushels of wheat in his warehouse, which he had used and had not paid for, it taking more wheat to make a barrel of flour that year than usual. He owed J. A. Craw ford some $15,000 to $20,000 on account of the latter indorsing notes for him which Crawford had to pay. In this state of things he conveyed his mill and warehouse to Crawford at a valuation of about $50,000, in consideration of which Crawford agreed to pay for the shortage of wheat in the ware house. He had at the same time conveyed to Wm. Crawford, brother of John A. Crawford, a brick block valued at $20,000, in alleged pay ment and satisfaction of a balance of $16,000 said to be due on notes given by Foster when he purchased the mill from AVin. Crawford in 1867. Foster was in debt to other peo ple about $50,000, among which was $13,000 due to Sibson, Church ot Co. for advances they had made him on flour. This suit is brought by Neal, assignee of fciibson, Church & Co., to enforce a judgment which was obtained for this .$Io,000 to set aside the conveyance of property id tiie Crawfords is fraudulent and intended to defraud the other creditors. As to tiie brick block, it is claimed that the notes were paid long ago, and no consideration' passed at all. As to the mill, it is admitted that he owed J. A. Craw ford not to exceed 9$0,000, but it is alleged that the conveyance was marie to hinder delay and defraud other creditors. The case was argued by Messrs Williams & Wood for plaintiff and Mr. Wolverton, of Albany, for de lendant (Joitra, who is a plaintiff in fact, and Messrs E. C. Bron al?gh, of this city, and L. Flinn, of Albany, for defendants. After hearing the arguments the court took the matter under advisement. A Crooked Agent. Of course, no one knows it to be absolutely so, but ever j tiling points toward Lane's con niviag in the matter. If Le is not in caliuots with Lackland, he has bungled the matter as he did the Jacii Roonev affair, making the CMiinty a lot of expense, and ut allowing the officer to subpoena the prosecuting witness. She whs subpeenaed against his will, he would not assist her to go out, and thus Benton county hss an expense bill to pay and no conviction. Later It has developed that Lane tried to buy off John Admns, Anna's uucle, by ofteriug him $50 and' telling him that LacKland would send him $ 100 from Portland.
