R. encampment in our city brings that organization prominently be fore the public, and will cause roany to ask what is the object of the organization. Perhaps there will be a very few Who will think that One Ot the j r I objects sought after is the perpetu- j ation of the sectional strife and j differences that led to the war of the rebellion, to keep alive the animosities of the strife and per petuate the memories thac by some are termed the "bloody shirt" records. But no one at all familiar j with the work of the order wi.I ! narDor such a oenei. There is but cne object in the order, and that is to establish such j a fraternity of feeling by the ex- j ercise of charity to all, as will j promote Lyalry to the country, j and forever protect and perpetuate t . , , , . i Villi. UVCllllllCilb UIIU IC1IUCI USC1CS'' and impossible any future resort to arms and bloodshed in this fair land of ours. As to the main work of the order we cannot do better than to refer to the foliowinur extract from the eloquent and aide annual address I o Commander .u. L. OlniStead : I ..r. . . uo i r i i Ouringt ne year 1SS the Grand : , i-niv. in reiievin'T its neetlv. and pendent comrades and their -milies, expended the sum of! ;:"-3o,9.4, relieving from want more ! an 20,00'J persons. hy should e survivin ' veterans ne ooiikc . l i i , ; carry this burden? Thev who! ive given so unu;li to that coun y whose treasury vaults are now irsling with surplus millions, are ipy not entitled to relief? ''It is a fact, established beyond ispute, that by reason oi our ;rvice as soldiers, tiie average of ar lives is from live to ten years iiortened; add to this our various nns of service, and we have ; om six to (ifteen years less of ' te than our le owmen m which ; , ,. , ! make our way in the world and I rovide not Oll'.V for Olir Own ease i rid comfort in our declining VCai'S, I . . .. , , . i 'lit 1U1 lll.t: urj.LTllucin UO do veil, to say noiiiing of the short- tied enjoyment of the comforts of i 0,,rt-ha!f .-tones high, hard finished, splen , " ... . .' , , , i did well of water, small barn, situated o l his world, which of right belongs o us. "When our country called us to he .field we left our business rela ions to drift into chaos, or into he hands of rivals and stay-at-lomes, and when we returned, veary and impoverished, we found lie business of the country in the lands of others, who had stepped nto our vacant places, and our ives became a severe struggle in .dversity, and against great odds or existence upon a crowded tage of aci ion ; and amid the rials of pastoral life, forgotten in he toils of the w-.r. the "wonder .s ihat there are now so few of us n' almshouses and other institu ions of public charity. Those -vho gave only of their substance inancially to aid their country luring the lird years of our ser vice, enduring no hardships or privations, many of them, indeed, by their private peculations doing much to prolong the great struggle, have received, and are still re ceiving, full payment for all they j.ver invested 1 will not say gave, find this is the reward of those who from high and pure motives embarked their lives upon the tempestuous tide of that troubled sea of time, with all that life on earth had for them to give: they eceived the promises of the gov ernment, worth less til iGftv cents ou the dollar. Of this injustice we have a right to complain, and to which I desire to call the atten tion of everv comrade. We are now 3S2,000 strong; we have promised to assist our comrades who may need help, and as we j have marched shoulder to shoulder tor tneir reliet tor more man twenty years, sometimes in the pride of victory, and again in the gloomy shadow of defeat, so we must continue to stand by them; we must consider now, that as the years accumulate upon us, so will the number increase among us who will fall among the needy ranks, and it becomes our duty now, while our numbers are yet suffi cient to entitle us to a respectable consideration, to po influence leg islation that in our old age there shall be no wail of sorrow heard from homeless, disabled veterans or their families." The republican state central committee, in formulating the work of the approaching state and I county convention, apparently j were of a courageous frame of mind and, as the phrase goes, vol untarily took the bull by the horns by putting in the cull the idea of a protective tariff. They simply an ticipate the action of the conven tion, for the people are not ready to adopt direct and onerous taxa tion in the place of a revenue tariff, and any tariff at all is a pro tective tariff.
