has made an excess baggage rate

winter is over, and although there

session at 10 a. m. to-day, and the
regular business of the department
will convene in the G. A. R. hall
at 2 p. m. A reception with supper
will be given the visitors at their
hall to-night. After the regular
business session to-morrow the
play, "The Veteran of 1812," will
he repeated at the opera house,
with additional exercises.

December was a clean and enjoya
ble one. The professor enjoys the
distinction of being the only col
ored graduate from the Cincinnati
college of music, as well as the
onlv colored professor of music
ever in the Cincinnati public:
schools. As a student, he was
earnest and painstaking, having a
mark of nine in a maximum of
ten. For two years Professor Mc
Kanlass studied in Leipsic, giving
his attention to violin, theory,
harmony and composition. The
professor's traveling represents
sixteen years of his life, and dur
ing that time he has visited Eng
land, France and Australia. His
musical specialties are new and
original, his feat of playing two
cornets at once, and also that of
playing on eight different instru
ments at one and the same time,
being original with him. Taken
all in all, the professor is certainly
a musical genius, one who com
bines a natural ear for music with

The annual show of stallions for

A Newspaper Company Organized to Start

Salem. Feb. 21. The Capital
Journal Publishing company tiled
to day articles of incorporation
with the secretary of the state. The
incorporators were N. L. Chamber
lain, W. H. Byars, W. H. Parry.
Capital stock $5000. This paper
will next Monday supplant the
Evening Sntery, the last issue of
which appeared to night.
The Ueer or the Sorthwt-st.
The gjeat deer range in North
ern Wisconsin, across Minnesota
to Dakota, and covers the country
adjacent to Brusli City and Prince
ton and to the norch of Brainerd.
There are very few deer on the
Red Lake Reservation, and very
few about Duluth, because the
wolves are so uumerous in the
counties adjacent. The wolves
drive the deer out. At the ex
treme frontier the deer are found
in good condition. They breed in
the timber, aud remain there dur
ing; the Summer, aud are driven
out by the wolves in the Fall. Be
tweeu tiie Indians and the wolves
mauy deer are wastefully destroy
ed. It is necessary to kill the
wolves to keep the deer crop, and
the bounty in doing some good.
But the deer are not getting exter
minated. You might as well talk
about exterminating the ducks,
cranes, gulls, pelicans, and all
I kinds of water fowl, which breed
up iu the Peaice River country.

in 1878, when the prairie fires got
into the timber, aud drove the
deer into lie settlements.
