A CIHX.OIAV CHILLY KITH; He Gets Into the Biver and Remains for Several Honrs Nearly Haked From Mr. Andrew Blevins, who resides near Blevins' Bridge on the the Calapooia, is learned the particulars of a very chilly and al most fatal catastrophe that hap pened to aChinaman.whojattempt ed to cross the stream Thursday on horseback. The water was very high, occasioned by melting snow and ice, and the child-like Mon golian who milked cows and did chores on a neighboring farm and was returning home, rode unwit tingly into the dtep water. After being washed down the river sev eral hundred yards he became free from his horse and climbed into a tree. His cruis attracted the at tention of Mr. Blevins who hasten ed Xo his assistance and with the help of neighbors procured a beat and rescued him. lie had taken off nearly all of his clothing in his attempts to swim ashore and was nearly chilled to death by his long imprisonment. His horse which was still swim mini about in the icy water also nearly dead was taken out alive. The Mongolian was taken to a farm house and warmed up, after which he seemed- little the worse for his chilly experience. 1KO.V tilt AM tOl.Ml. Riley, Jan. 12. There has4 been some loss of stocK, old, poor, horses and cows unused to feed were chilled to death. We think the Disseminator must be froze up on the road, as it has not got here for three weeks. Snow began falling on the first instant, and fell to tne depth of 18 mclies, ami has been that deep ever since. It has been very col 1, 4U (leg. below zero, chickens freez ing. Hay is very hard to get ; some hauling from Harney here, 40 miles. There will be a great loss of sheep, as the snow is so deep that many are unable to feed. A family by the name of John son are stopping at Geo. Selsers waiting for the storm to break. They are on their way Perhaps a few words to Harney, from this storm-bound country interest to you. Born, to the wife will be of of James Smith Jan. 6, a son. Tough Burglars. The two burglars arrested atCor va'.lls for breaking into a gun store at that place are bad men. The Leader says they declare they will make their escape if they have to kill the jailor to uo it. Mr. Pygall caught the one who escaped last week at Jefferson. A ball and c tain has been attached to the leg of each. On Sunday morning when Deputy David Osborn went into their ceils he found that they had sawed the shackles off. The cut is smooth and indicates that it was done with a fine saw. A piece of scythe blade and an old case knife, each hacked for sawing, were found in the cell, having been passed in from some person out side. Mr. Osborn has very prop el ly taken piecautions to prevent escape. He has had riveted on them shackles and has put them in separate cells. Scaring the l.inl. Only a few days more remain in which buyers can secure boots and shoes of kedfield & Brownell at a discount of 15 per cent. And right here let us say that we have no old shelf-worn stock, but ali are new, clean and stylish and fully warranted. Every pair, being marked in plain figures insures one price to all. We guarantee our 15 per cent, off to equal any 25 per cent, offered by other houses, having marked our goods at prices that should we give the 25 per cent, oil would jdace many of them below cost. And now we say come and let us convince you ot this truth. Come and you wiL not regret it, only come. If you have to borrow money, do it, and come. Kedfield & Brownell. Aliout Boot ami hlioes. In order that the public may not be deceived by dealers who in advertising their own goods convey the idea that our boots and shoes not marked in plain figures, and that our 25 per cent, reduction j is not oomnae, we desire to say that every article of merchandise I is marked in plain figures. And here is the pinch our goods are j marked so plain and our great of- ler of 2o per cent, reduction on all boots and shoes in our store is so obvious that those desiring good quality of boots and shoes at very low prices cannot help seeing it. A. B. McIlwain. Mill Prolong His Slay. On account of the large number of applicants for treatment, Dr. Henry J.
