Cleveland's "Free Trade" Policy Is Not j Wanted by the Grangers of Oregon. j Pomona grauge of Marion county, a representative body of the order, j met January 12th "at Woodburn j grange hall." It was a good meet- j mg, and in addition to the regular order of business heard an inter esting description of the state lecturer's tour in Eastern Oregon, where he" has recently been, having organized twelve new granges. The grange had under consider ation the resolutions adopted by Salem grange on the 7th , and pub lished in the Herld of the" 10th. They were adopted by unan imous vote in open meeting in the afternoon. An address on the subject of the president's message, and an address made to the Ore - gon state grange while in session at Salem last Mav bv Governor Pennoyer, was made by John Minto." The criticisms " on the message were to the point. 1st. The proposition to continue the internal revenue taxes were a i glaring injustice to the fanners j cultivating the raw material upon which they take etl'ect. 2d. That' j trio main purpose of the message i j seems to be to persuade the labor- -I ing jnan that he is a grievous sul- i ferer by the law levying duties on i j imports to an extent beyond what i a fair examination into the subject , win warrant. ii. mat me propo-; sition of the president to make a j radical reduction upon or admit ! free raw material, was in its effect j to tax the American fanner for the i benefit of the manufacturer, and ; j make the burdens of taxation mere , ! unequal than they now are. 4th. ; That the message read like a : j labored attempt to array the labor ' ing and manufacturing interests j against the interests of producers I of raw material, showing no other ! interest in the farmer than to try to make him believe that he now pays more for the protected cloth- ing that he buvs than he receives in i he enhanced price of his wool by the tariff duties. In other words, the message, as to fanners, advocates free trade, but not with the openness and candor of the address made to the Oregon state grange last May by Governor Pen noyer. The governor's address was reviewed and it was shown that in his use of the statistics of the gross earnings of farms and manufactures, respectively, as proof ot the great profits of man ufactures and small profits of farm ing, there was a great delusion. The governor, quoting the statistics of 1880, showed over ten billions iiii-K(cu in laiuis, giving ii ioo3 annual uiuuucL ui uri Liuee . , . . . billions, and showing an invest - ment ot less than three billions in manufactures, turning out a jfross product to the value of mote than five billions of dollars. These sta tistictics being used by Governor Pennoyer as a proof of the om parative profits of farming and manufacturing, the speaker claimed were utterly worthless, as there is nothing in them to show the profits of either branch of industry; and if used to show the great advan tage secured to manufacturing, or against the interests of the farmer, the- ought to have '.he very oppo site eliect from that intended by the governor namely, to empha size Ijjs advice to buy as well as, sell in the markets of Europe, as they embody the value of till the raw material the American tanner i produces as a basis ( f manufactures and all that is imported for the same purpose, as well as all the products of the forest and mines used in raw material. Conse quently they prove home manu factures to be the best market the American farmer can have for at least three-fourths of his surplus. The speaker ihu-liat.'d his point by showing that out of a table of the values of eighteen leading manufactures, according to the census of all but four were based on farm products,- and in those f breadstuff's, slaughtered and packed meats and woolen man- ulactures, aggregating .fl .,07(1,001 ,- IK-IS. all tin grain, live stock and , wool, except L.s,00(.H)0 pounds of ; wool linponeo, were products ot , American soil and claimed the1 ! cotton ought to be. He. therefore, j claimed it is unwise for the Aineri i can farmer to become dependent ; upon and a customer to the man- ufactures of EurojK-. That such a i course would feed the interests of aliens and starve our own. would ! surely bring down the amohiments of American labor and condition ! of the laborer to the European j level, as the protection afforded bv jour revenue laws for the past I twenty-five years have tended to i keej) them up, while we as a people , nave made such advancement jn i lwwt'r a,1(t w';li'b as no other nation or any age or country ever consmereo deceptive.
