be made. Rumor also says that a
small steamer left New York with
another party who are in the same
chase.
A noted character, well known
in the Bahamas and in this place
ali.o, who is a monomaniac on
money-digging, came here in the
Maria. aDd no doubt was in her at
Old Providence. If the repor s
about the treasure in question
comes from him, aud these parties
have gone in search of it from that
man's statements, then it is indeed
a "wild-goose chase of the mtst gi
gantic kind.
About four years ago this man
was in Kingston, Jamaica, told a
tale similiar to the above, aud got
the merchants and men worked up
to a high pitch of excitment, so
much so that they fitted out an ex
pedition and went in search of the
treasure. He stated he was afraid
that while he was at work getting
the treasure which he described
as being immense lots of gold coin,
gold candlesticks, platens and
chalices, which were stolen from
churches from time to time, and a
large lot of diamonds, jewerly, etc.

an appeal was made to the Gover
nor General of Jamaica, who or
dered a gunboat to accompany the
expedition. They proceeded to
