Mitchell introduced the following;
bill for the erection of a new
custom house at Yaquina City,
which was read twice and referred
to the committee on Public Build
ings and Grounds :
Be it enacted by the senate and
house of representatives of the
United States of America in con
gress assembled : That the Secre
tary of the treasury be, and he is
hereby, authorized and directed
to purchase a site for, and cause to
be erected thereon, a suitable
building, with fireproof vaults

No Blame Attached to the Killing of Brake

A most shocking accident oc
curred here at the Narrow Gauge
depot last night, when one of the
brakesman on the freight train was
killed almost instantly. A coro
ner's jury was at once called and
reported as follows ;
We the jury in the above investi
gation of th! "death of Wm. Chris
tian find that he came to his death
on the 11th dav of January, 1888,
about 9 :40 p. i. We find that the
deceased came to his death by be
ing crushed by the cars, having
fallen under them in some way un
known to the jury, and we attach
no blame to any one.

Sume Unfortunate IAccidents Which Have
OccurredlDnring the Fast Few Days.
Information was received in this
city last night that Mrs. Ephriam
Frum, residing near Knox Butte,
had fallen in such a manner as to
break her thigh. Dr. Maston was
summonad and will start this morn
ing to render medical assistance.
Wiliiam Alone, a man working
in a logging camp, near Crawtords
ville a few days ago, while hand
ling a wire cable, let his hand get
into the pulleys, mashing off all
the fingers on the left hand. The
injury was so severe that all the
fingers had to be amputated.
A few davs ago Mrs. George
Kauble, of Brownsville, fell on the
icy ground near her door and broke
her left arm between the elbow
and wrist.
