were represented. The committee
fixed the basis of apportionment,
and recommended primaries to be

burned this morning. 1'tie heav

Bewley. Nearly all the goods
were saved in a damaged condition,
xcept those of Mr. Worthingion,
A'liich were an entire loss. Ten
houses in all were burned. The

Sa'em Grange, P. of H., at its
regular meeting on the 7th had a
more than usual interesting meet
ing. One of the members occupied
most of the session until noon read
ing a very elaborate address on free
trade as a panacea for low prices of
farm products.
In lie afternoon another member
irrroduced the following preamble
and resolutions, which were dis
cussed, adopted, and ordered pub
lished by the grnniie. The votes
were not unanimous, some of the
members nrefer'ing that the prenm
ole be : left out, others favoring the
second resolution, but 'desiring
time to consider the first. Follow
ing are the preamble and resolu
tions: Whereas, The president, in his
late message to congress, has called
the attention of the citizenship of
the United States,! well as that
of their representatives, to the tact
that, under present laws, there is
more revenue coining iato the na
tional treasury than is being used
for purposes of government, so that

Vv hereas, The tenor of the presi
dent's message is to continue the
internal revenue taxes which wre
ievied during the civil war, which
are a direct and excessive burden
upon certain agricultural products
(as tobacco), and throw off the im
port duties now laid upon certain

wool), thereby admitting to our
home markets the products of other
countries on terms more favorable
foreign producers than to our
own citizenship, and.
Whereas, The well-ascertained
effect ot a reduction of the tariff
Inties on wool, made in 1883, has
been to increase the accumulating
surplus in the Ireasury by encour
iging importations ot wool, while

much as possible the advantage of
his home market, and we favor the
levying of such 'import duties in
such manner as will tend to pro
tect . most those manafacture?
winch are most assential to a com
plete national independence of the
agrcuitural and manafacturing in
terest ot other nations, amongst
which we would specify the pro
duction and manufacture of iron,
steel, lumber, cotton, wool, mohair
flax and hemp.
Second, We favor such change in
our nataraliz itiou laws as will pre
vent the immigration of paupers
and ignorant laboreis from other
countries, whose only object is to
seek to live on our prosperity. J
