Always lived in California till I came here to look after my interest in the Home stake mine, sir. "Were you one of the '49-ers?" "No sir: I wasn't. I didn't reach California till 1850." "Am l should ttink that was near enough so you could stretch it a little and say you got there in '49 ." "I could if I wanted to make a liar of myself, but I don't, sir. I'm a man of my word, sir, and even if 1 was going to he I wouldnthe about a little thing like that.' I was somewhat crestfallen, and after he had stepped o'U I suggest ed to the proprietor of the hotel that the Californian was the first man from that State of his age that I ever met who did not claim that be reached there in '49. "When did he tell you that he went?' asked the proprietor. "In J8o0. He said' he wouldn't lie about it for worlds it does me good to see a Californian at last who can tell tbe truth on that point." "Yes; well, you haven't seen one yet. To my certain knowledge the first time that old fellow struck California was in '67, when he came down from Vancouver Is land, where he went three or four years before to avoid the draft." But as lie stood shivering under the "L" Station at Fifty ninth street aud Third avenne hi loneliness and entire misery drew a sympathetic glance now and the.i from a passer by. He did not seen to be a city dog; he appeared tort shy and iguoraut of city ways for t!at, ud lie looked anxiously in the face of each new comer as if seeking a friend. But none came. He tried to get on a surface car but the conductor yelled and a iHt-senger kicked at him, so he sneaked into the lee of one of the iron posts and shivered more mis erably than ever. Two iittle girls came along and stopped a moment to speak to "poor iittle doggie,'' who attempt ed a little wag of the tail in re sponse. Then they patted him and spoke kindly to him, and so cheer ed the poor little waif that he frisked about the and whined for jov. A heavy , lumbersome brew ery wagon bene down on them. With the rattle overhead aad the Babel ot noise about them, the two little tots did not heed the rapidiy neariog danger nor hear the shout that went cut to them fnm the sidewalk. But the homeless do did. Springing between thechlld ren and the advancing horses, he barked, his shrill treble rising high above the clamor ot the street . It was all done in a moment. The wagon rolled on ; the cbildreu spell-bound with fear, stood still; the dog, in a last desperate effiort to repay the kindness shown him, hurled himself at the advancing horses. One child is brushed as side and the other clutched by a friendly hand as tbe horses swerve at the dog's attack. The brewery wagon went on its way, rocking and swaying, and two tear-dimmed little faces peeped out from the sidewalk; ;afc a little heap on the stones of the street. Their defender had given in his life in grateful rediemberance of their kindness. He was only a dog; he knew no better. A Physiological Fact.
