March ot the Oregon Spring.
The see son marches onward
But it« maieh is all too slow,
For Granger ted out all his hay
Just seyen days ago.
The spring ¿lowers bud rnd blossom,
The birdtf sing sweet refrains;
But the mud gets deep and deeper,
For still it rains and rains.

The early springtime poet,
Goes forth in search of fame
Arraved in spring appa el.
But he gets wet just the same.
The stream which in the summer,
Glides SMOOthlv to the sea.
Now rushes madlv onward,
As muddy ns can be.
Yonr neighbor calls to see yon,
You smile, and t y in vain
r«> talk of war or wages,
His only theme is rain.
He ‘ never saw such weather
Since thirteen y en s ago,
It never lets up ra n
Till it begins to eviow.”
Too cold for grass to prosper,
Too wet to start the plow,
If summer comes I’ ll raise more feed
I tell you that rj^ht now.
The season marches onward

Work at our own Doors.
It is almost too much to hope that
tho men who have been called be
fore the grand jury to answer re
garding the alleged renting of
bouses for immoral and illegal pur
poses will be prosecuted. There is
no doubt whatever iu tho mind of
any member of the community who
has any knowledge of the owner
ship and management of certain
houses in Portland*that these men
are guilty of an offense against the
law.
But that the neoessai-y evi
dence to convict, them will be forth
coming, will not be suppressed, or
if not suppressed, will secure their
.conviction against the force of the
“ pull” which each can muster, is a
doubtful question.
There is a remedy outside the
legal remedy for the state ol moral
turpitude in which a great many
citizens of Portland have fallen and
it lies mainly in the hands of the
women, as does nearly every other
social reform.
J" the reputable
women of the town who have the
good of the community really at
heart should refuse to socially recog
nize any man to be guilty of rent-
iug or receiving revenue directly or
indirectly from houses used for im
moral purposes, there would be a
great change for the better in Port
land. The woman who has reached
years of discretion and is willing to
eat the food, wear the clothes and
be tho recipient of all cr any of the
necessities or luxuries of life which
are purchased in whole or part by
the money which is a part of the
traffic in human souls and bodies,
deserves to be socially ostracised.
The pressure brought to bear upon
tbe sonB, husbands, fathers aud
brothers of such women would be
too great to admit of resistance.
Women who have taken a fore
most part in reform work pertain
ing to tbe southern states and the
negro question, or to East India
at:d the child widow evil, utterly
neglect and ignore the work at their
own doors which they could do so
much better by reason of the fact
that, they would have some knowl
edge of the subject
There is a
teudeucy on the part of women to
-diirk this question, save in private,
and then they are, or prelend to be,
very much shocked and doubtful
that such things could be, or that,
granting their existence, they should
ever come up for discussiqp, there
be some women who agree with the
same sort of men, that these evils
are necessary evils, but they are not
in the majority, for which we are
duly thankful. But if the thing is
not wrong it is right, and if it is
right that it should be, it cannot be
wrong to discuss it. It must bo dis
cussed if it is ever to be righted,
nnd the most pessimistic of us must
admit that it has been righted to a
small extent in other cities, and is
not quite so bad as it once was even
here.
Moral suasion is a better thing
than compulsion, nnd more effective.
Why not try a little moral suasion
and see what the effect will be.—
Portland Journal.

¡Georgia Monument to a Negro.
We doubt veiy much if any north
ern cities would have taken the
trouble to erect a marble monument
to a neg o who lost his life in an
effort to save another human being.
But Columbus, Georgia, has done
this for Bragg Smith, stirred, per

tempt to save a white man—the
city engineer.
Creditable as the
event is in every way, it brings
out ones more the inconsistency in
our treatment of the colored man.

The bill also authorized the treas
ury department to coin 250,000
gold souvenir dollars, which will !>e

The bill provides for a govern
