é ù 't ìi Ih ^TUESD AY, T ir a li!. SEPT- 1, 1903. Onr first pago this week is d e voted to a lengthy description of the Louisnna Purchase exposition at S tLon is. The work o f get ting up a fine display for Coos County should be pushed forward as rapidly as possible. Th is is too grand an opportunity to miss. The appropriations have been made for the Lewis and Clai k ex position, and we may as well get in and reap our share o f the bene fits as to lay back on our oars and allow other sections all the advan tage. As we said during the agi tation o f the Lewis and Clark move, if we do not get our share o f the benefits to be derived form this exposition, it will Certainly be our own fault. One good dis play can be osed for both o f these affairs and will nat cost a great deal either. I f the county court has no right to expend county funds for such ¡purpose, a series of entertainments should be given for the benefit o f a fund for this pur pose. The Southern Oregon Stats N or mal School begins this vear’s work September i6tb. A large working library bas been added; the physi cal and chemical laboratory has been fu lly equipped; a now gym- nasiam building is being erected, and a large and handsome school building is nearing completion. The sobool grounds are beautiful and picturesque. The health condi tions are o f the best; the sooial en vironment is pure and stimulating; the course of study has been strengthened and made more prac tical. The faculty has been in creased in number and the school is now equipped to do work o f the highest order. This school belongs to Southern Oregon. I t desires and merits the patronage o f the people o f this great section. For catalogue uddress, B e n ja m in F. M u lk e y , President, Ashland, Oregon. And now someone is uukind enough to come forward with the statement Moses, the great law giv er, married a negro and to cite the first verse o f the twelfth chapter of Numbers in support o f the prop osition. Howeyer, men could have so many wives in those days that they were doubles» often hard put to secure variety. Kiug Peter o f Servia is between his satanic majesty and tho deep sea. The European powers object to his retaining in office tue as sassins of his predecessor and the assassius threaten to return to their former trade if K ing Peter turns them out o f office. The circumlocution methods of the Government are demonstrated bv the fact that -the Department o f Agriculture is advertising for “ expert grafters” when the Post- office Department, just two blocks away, has more than it knows what to do with. Port to be Built up to Compete With Portland and aeattle tor Trans pacific Trade. S p e c ia l to th e C oast M a il . San Francisco, August 31.— I f George Gonld carries out his plans, within a short time he will have reached the Pacific coast with a railroad in two places, one in Cali fornia and the other in Oregnn. W hile tho two roads m y retain separate corporation identities, the management will be something like that of the Union Pacific aud Ore gon Short Line. B y the same interest the Western Pacific is to connect Gould’s system at Salt Lake with San Francisco, while the Coos Bay road is to form a link between Salt Lake and the northwestern coast. It is the intention to build up the port o f Coos Bay, which will bid against Portland and Seattle for the great and growing trade be tween the Pacific northwest and Si beria, China, Corea and Japan. The construction of the Sibsrian railroad has gived an immense ira- mence impetus to the trade of the northwestern ports and JGould, backed by Rockefeller, 'is determin ed to have a share of it. The Coos Bay road has not been surveyed, but as pro jo ted in a general way it is run from Coos Bay, 100 miles north of tho California line, southwest through the rich tim ber and agricu ltu ral bistricts of Southern Oregon, across northern Nevada rnd Utah into Salt Lake, K lllert b r »«■ r a v e l T r a in . Jeesse E. Todd, 27 years old, of 468 East Ninth street, was instantly killed in the darkness of early Sun day morning by being run over by gravel cais used for grading for the Orgon Water Power & Railway Company, on the East Side, op posite Ross Island. When thejfatillity happened, on ly Todd ami the engineer o f train were present, and it was Todd’s duty to give a signal to the engin eer to start the train by flashing a lantern. The signal was given but from n’ direciion that was unexpected and suddenly the engineer saw the lighted lamp between tho cars. On stoping the train he found that Todd had disappeared, and that the lamp dangled form a coupling pin. A short | distance away Todd’s body was found, with the head sev ered from the body. The latter'was badly cut. It is supposed that Todd missed his footing and either fell from a car, or between the cars. His father is a survayor in the Philippine Islen Is, and his home in this country was at Forest Grove.— Oregonian Decased was a son of Aurelias Todd, formerl o f this city, and a grandson of our townslady Mrs, Elizabeth Fouts. The Quarterly of the Oregon Historical Society for June, 1903, has been received. Platt; “ The Great West and the Two Easts,” by Henry E. Reed; “ Social nud Economic History of Astoria,” by Alfred A. Cleveland; “ A Pioneer Captain of Industry in Oregon," by Prof. James R. There is little joy in living when the dis ordered nerves prevent sleep and rest; when one wakes from a restless night more tired than the night before; when one is forced to drag through the round of daily duties with out energy, ambition or interest This con dition is due to a derangement of the nerves which may be speedily regulated and strengthened by Dr. Miles’ Restorative Nervine.
