’fjm, Coquille VOL Ííc n ü ó . COQUILLE CITY, OREGON, TUESDAY, JULY 14, 1903. '¿\, D E N T IS T On a Mountain Trail. J. Curtis Snook, D. D. S. B y R obert R oland . dears. I left the old farm a few months after our adventure, and tho’ I was back there for a day or two’s visit now and then for a year and a half, it was never my home any more, tho’ everyone there in cluding my dog, always gave me a cordial welcome. Then I went into another state, and after an absence of several years, returned a full- fledged collegiate, but after family greetings my first question was: “ Mother, where’s Gelert?” “ He is dead, my son." “ And for how long? and nobody even wrote me about it, “ It must be over a year, Robert. Poor Gelert met with an accident which smashel one of his legs, and your brother William had to shoot him to put him out of his misery. He buried him somewhere.” And away I rushed to find Will and af ter our greetings were over, he went with me to the spot where ho had buried my brave old friend. “ I gave him a decent burial,” said brother Will, “ because he was such a friend of yours, and because he deserved it for his faithful life, and bravo fight with the old buck. It was a bard thing for me to do to shoot the poor fellow, but it wns merciful,” And I thanked him. Will was such a good thoughtful brother. Gelert’s grave was by a large oak stump. Bister had planted some flowers there, such as live through the wiuter, and on that same stump I sat down and cried over tho grave of my dog. I shed a lot of great salt tears—I, a young man of t wenty two—home from college, but I’m not ashamed of it. I should have boen ashamed of myself if I hadn’t. But for tho dear dead dog, whose bones lay buried there, I might have been crippied for life, or oven never lived to see a college. My Gelert in that one hard con test, and bis life ot faithfulness, had proved himself worthy of his name.” And when I saw some of my nieces wiping their eyes, nnd the younger nephews who were not off hunting or fishing, looking exceed ingly sober, I knew thnt the mem ory of iny dog had affected them also, tho’ he was dead many long years before any of them were boru. “ Why Uncle Robert,” said sever al pretty nieces, gathering around me, and some of them getting hold of n y hands: “ Your story abont Gelert is as good as the story of the deer fight If you had'nt told us about him, we would’nt half appre ciate the other," and Sammy Snooks shouted up and said, “if ho ever had a dog he’d name him ‘Gelert.” “ And so will I, nnd I, and I,” af firmed a lot more, which shows that children admire noble qualities even in a dog, as well as older people, and ns like as not, a good deal more. And Gelert my dog, Ilesquiercal in pace. * «•» * for court houso................... 15 00 Petition for aid on road from ’ Myrtle Point to North Fork bridge, W H Mansell. 6 tons coal for court house nnd hm l fi t... 18 75 with subscription list attached, con sidered, and tbe amount of $690.00 Peto Johnson, 6 loads wood for court h ojao................. 7 50 ippropriated to be applied after subscription shall have been used.
