SHAD HUDSON, : Hudson & NO 36 COQUILLE CITY, OREGON, TUESDAY, MARCH 17, 1903. VOL 20. : J . E . H A YN E S. Haynes, Tbe following which we take from the Evening Telegram reminds us c l the situatiou of Coos couuty nnd the condition of affairs which exist ed between it and the balance of the state ever since this county was oc- cupiid by the whites uutil recently. The maintenance of a steamer line to Coos bay lias, to some extent, re- lcived the situation, but the service is not yet what it should he. One steamer which gees as far south ns San Francisco each trip makes her rounds altogether too infre quent. Two weeks is altogether too long for one to he obliged to wait in case he arrives in Portland just after the steamer has sailed. By the opening of the Lewis and Clark ex|«osition in Portland there should Vie at least one steamer run ning direct between Portland and Coos hay, and another between be tween Porllaud nnd tbe Coquille, calling in at Coos liny if needs be. The Telegram gives this letter with remarks: A prominent wholesale grocery house of Portland reeeutly sent to a Lukeview merchant, among other, a circular ealling his atteution to a certain brand of goods the jobbing house recommended, nnd the mer chant's reply, names being omitted, is substantially as follows: “ It is unfortunate that we are so situated that your alluring proposi tion can afford us no benefit, other tlmn highly colored reading matter. IV hi is incurring the expense of two cents in postage, necessary to lay your proposition before us, you have overlooked the fact that wo do not know Portland commercially; that Oregon surrendered this territory, for all business purposes, to her sister state on the south, years ago, aud that with our recognition of you as our “ dad’’ politically, all our allegiance ends; that we are com pelled to turn to our foster parent for the necessary means of support, she who pays us aunually $200,000 for our beef, $160,000 for our mut ton, $50,000 for our horses and mules, nnd $250,00();for our wool And in consideration of tbe forego ing, the party of the second part (Lake and Klamath— we are it) agree aud do pay to the aforesaid annually $100,000 for goods, wares aud merchandise, and to her rail roads nno.lmlf of this sum. lor bringing three good- toils. sa\ing nothing of the immense sums paid into the same sotnvi for transport ing our Ueef, motion and wool to their markets. ‘ ‘You also say that “ we are in closing you a postal card, which we ask you to kindly fill out and return to us, setting a dale at which out- salesman may call and show you our line." W e are answer: When you are prepared to buy what we have to sell anil deliver at a less freight rute than we are now paying for the goods we require; then send your man with the grip, and you will find us ioady to assist him in fastening it into our trade.” CorameDt is needless. This letter bluntly but clearly states a fact that should lie sufficient to wake up Portland, as it never was waked up before, to what this {taper declared truly not long ago is “ the most im portant thing” to be done. prosecuted criminally, United States District Attorney Woodworth hit upon tho iden of instituting a civil Buit against them nnd thus enjoiu- ing them from allowing their sheep <*n the reserves. A writ of injunction was granted last August by Judge Beatty, sitting fo r ju d g e Morrow in the Circuit Court, restraining sheep men from pasturing their herds on Govern ment reservations, as it was declared that the animals were devastating them. In the face of this order, a number of owners pastured (th eir flocks on the Stanislas Forest Res. ervation and four of them were ar rested, convicted and fined $100, or sentenced to remain in prison until such fine was paid. They paid their fincR, bnt appealed the case. Sheep men everywhere became interested. The summary action of the arrest of the four herders bnd the effect of causing all sheepmen to remove their flocks from the reserves, but united them in fighting tho case. The decision of Mon Jay is final. By its provisions no sheep can be pastured on reserves without the permission of the general land of fice, approved by the Secretary of the Interior.— Plaindealer. * »<•»« Death Stalked on Ship- nothing of the shipper’s methods or as the case may be, he know s that his grading is irregular nnd pack ing faulty, he (the commission mer chant) must see the te-it before he can sell it, and being thus delayed, this fruit must take its ehnnees when the demand has been par tially supplied and prices have been correspondingly lowered.— North west Pacific Farmer. •---- ----- ► •«» » « -- • A Murderer Fointu A Moral. Murderer Benson, worn out, be draggled, starving, collapsed, Las bns been captured, and should with no great delay be tried, aud, as there is no doubt about bis case, duly hanged, ns a warning to other young men who are inclined to cu ter upon the downhill path of law less or evil ways. Little crimes lead to greater ones, and many a boy who only meant to do a little wrong, to be a little reckless of the laws nnd rules and regulations of civilized socioty, lias found himself, frequently ns in this case while yof a young innn or mere youth, con demned to mount a scaffold and be banged for murder. Benson is a very different type from Tracy; it is but rarely that even a confirmed criminal is possessed of the wonder ful “ nerve” of the Oregon outlaw' of Inst summer; this murderer is an ignorant, weak fellow, and it is curious that he was able to commit the crime he did. He is a proper object of some measure of pity, yet pity must not extend to the point of attempting any prevention of the law’s proper penalty. Look at him, consider that doomed wretch ye youth who are beginning to tread the slippery, shadowy and be deviled path of crime or even of vice, and reflect that every step you ‘ ake therein increases the chances of your standing some day where Benson stands today.— Telegram.
