The former tried to do his work better than any other man in the gang, the am bition of the latter was to get as much pay as possible in proportion to work done, and hence he gave as little work for his stipend as he could and yet held bis job. If he had spent a little thought upon the subject ho would have realized that ho was greasing the polo he intend ed to climb. It is not only neces sary to think but to tbink right thoughts in order to rise in the world. He who studies only his owu temporary interest will remain ou tile ground, while those who make a mere judicious use of their intellect will go steadily up the ladder of success. The Irish hod carrier, when asked if his was not hard work, replied “ It is not the worruck I ’ m doing, I just carry up tho brick and mortbnr. The man at the top of the lather does tho wor- ruk.” The hod carrier igot $1.50 per day; the man who did “ the worruck” got $4.50 per day. It was the skill acquired by faithful offort of mind an 1 hand that nmde the difference. There are many farmers who spend their lives with out ever studying labor-saving and time-saving processes by which others are prospering, They are wearing themselves and their frames to a frazzle with object les ions easily accessible, plainly ex posing their folly. The farmer who with the liberty of choice heforo him(deliberately or without delib eration) continues the old methods and old implements can rightly blame no ono but himself for tho bad fortune which has been his com- panion through thick and thin. Men who fail iu business, or who fail to work their way upwards do so from choice. They have refused to pay tho price of success, which is labor, study and perseverenco.—, Farm aud Ranch. his case, for he has already been in dicted, but blocks inquiry as towhere the money came from that he so shamelessly distributed. It may be that he bad told what he knew, the public would have beed able to re gain the franchise rights jobbed away by the gang. It is not hard to guess whoso money kept him out oi the country during this period, though legal proof may not be forth coming. All this trouble tracks back to tlie political boss. Tlie governmental system of most of our great cities is just the environment tins species of parasite requires for its greatest development. And so it will continue until the people are given, not only the means of name- ing the men who shall serve them, but also an incentive to action.
