Boer Women and Boy« Fighting British Armies. NO. 30 Against Petaluma, Cal., Mxrch 2 4 . — Carl Kleiu, of Petaluma, is fighting with tbe Boers in South Africa. Klein left Petaluma two years ago, leav ing his wife and family of five little ones here. He is u barber, but was running a store in a small Boer vil lage near Johannesburg when the war broke out Saturday his wife received a letter from him, that he had written wheu he was a member of the besieging army before Lady smith. Klein may have been cap tured by the British forces, as, when the letter was written, his detach ment was cornered, and starvation or capture stared them in the face. Klein says the Transvual govern- ueut forced him to close his store aud go to the front. In his village of 500 population not a single able man was allowed to stay at home. In the fighting around Ladysmith were many boys of tbirtceu and fourteen years of age and “ hun dreds of women.” Many of the boys and women were tho equals of the men in skill with the rifle. The letter was written in December nnd Klein concluded by saying thnt the struggle was a hopeless one but thnt the Boers would fight it out to the bitter end. une Womair to Another Son— “What fools are they who preferred a hopeless war against a superior foe!"
