Steele tvas some dis tance off the road and had his hands uplifted securing berries from the higher branches, when crack when a gun and the charge of shot lodged in bis hands. It took him a moment to realize what occurred, and when he did he got from behind the bush and started in pursuit o f his assassin, who bad evidently realized his mistake aud started on the run for home. Steele saw the Cbinnmnn running with a gun in his band, but was unable to overtake him, ns his wounds were bleeding freely. He then made his way hack to Porter and Dr. Tower was summoned and dressed the wounds, taking out some 20 No. C shot from his hands, and the geutleman is im proving nicely.
