Tho cross-examiuiug attoruey was a smart young man, whose object was to disconcett tbe witness aud discredit his testimony. “ What did you say your name was?” was the first question asked. “ Yahn” — very deliberately— “ Pet erson.” “ John Peterson, eh? Old man Petor’s son, I suf pose. Well, John, where do you live?” “ Where Ah live? In Dulut” Now, Peterson, answer this ques tion carefully Are you a married man?” “ Ah tank so. Ah married.” “ Sovou think because you gotmar- ried you nre a married man do you? That’s funny. Now tell the gentle men of this exceptionally intelligent jury who you married.” “ W ho Ah marriedt Ah married a woman.” “ See here, sir! Don’t you know any better than to trifle with this court? What do you mean, sir? You married a woman? Of course you married a woman. Did you ever here of anyone mnrryiug a man?” 1 “ Yas. Mali sister did.” Five amendments lo the constitu tion of Oregon will he submitted by senate bill 224, for adoption or re- : jection at the geuerul election in June, 1900. They are: Abrogate section 10 of article 6 and substitute therefor a section providing that no city, school dis trict, ole., shnll become indebted to exceed 5 per cent on the taxable property. Abrogate section 10 of article 7 and substitute therefor n section giving the legislature authority to provide for the election of five judges of the supreme court. A new section to be known as section 19 provides for the construc tion of reservoirs or storage basins for lifigatiou purposes. One amendment provides for tbe repeal of the negro suffrage section. This, however, is of no effect, as it was annulled by the 14th amend ment of tho constitution of the United States. The 5th amendment is as follows: Add the following to the Oregon constitution: “ Article 1. The elective fran chise in this state shnll not here after be prohibited to any citizon on account of sex.” The equal suffrage proposition is the only amendment of the five heretofore submitted to the electors of Oregou. It was voted upon at Fham bi'rlsiu s Ceash « ‘ in.clj. This remedy is iutended especially the general election held June 2, for coughs, colds, croup, whoopiug 1884, and rejected by a vote of cough and influenza.
