The continuous efforts of other parties and persons to destroy this original Uniou party aud to change its name justify us iu addressing you at this time. “ By unselfishly and patriotically ac cepting and nominating W. J. Bryan, who was tho candidate of another party, in the hope of obtaining ono of tho leading principles of our plat forms, wo did not for a moment abandon any of our other principles, uor surrender the separate state and national existence of the People’s party. “ We urge the people of every precinct to form and maintain one or moro nonpartisau organizations for tho careful study of bimetallism, and all other great eeouomic qu j s - tions. “ We especially congratulate you on tho fact that tho Initiative and Optional Referendum, which was first called to your attention by our party, has been introduced during the past winter in the legislatures of at least I I states of the union, and was voted for by many Republi cans aud Democrats, as well as Populists, and tho constitutional amendment for this purpose was approved by both houses of the legislature of South Dakota. “ We therefore submit to you tho following resolution defining the position of our party with reference to other political parties and per sons. “ Resolved, That it is tho senso of our state central committee that the People’s party is a union of reform elements; that it is the original and only national Bimetallic party, and that we cordially invite all who are opposed to tire single gold standard aud its allied trusts and monopolies to act with us, and that wo are op posed to any attempts at fusion with any other political party or faction under uuy other name or upon . any different platform than that adopted by the Peoyle’s party national con vention at St. Louis. “In connection, we heartily indorse tho action of our members iu tho into attempted session of the lostis- Intive assembly, in refusing to assist either faction of the Republican party to organize the house of rep resentatives, without assurance of tho passage of measures that would make honest elections probable in Oregou, and give the voters direct power over lawmaking. “ Unanimously adopted by the People’s party state central commit- teee for Oregon this 15th day of April, 1897.” “ J o h n M.
