E. soap factory lias at last commenced operations, nud is turning ont an excellent quality of family soap, which all who believe in patronizing home industries should buy in preference to all others. Remember, the income derived from this soap stays right in tbs community, instead of going east to enrich foreign capitalists. Buy a box of “ Nothing But Soap.” Some of our members are pre paring to work up the broom corn grown this season and soon the people of this community will know whether or not brooms can be successfully grown and made here. Tbe last kiln o f brick to be burned this season is being sealed up. This kiln contains 200,000 brick, and will, with the 100,000 already on band, enable the Ex change, as soon ar a kiln o f lime is horned, and the weather will permit, to put up its own building. Mr. L. Oldenburg is depositing one hundred cords o f wood as fast •s it can be hauled. Now that harvesting and the election will soon be over, the Ex change will presently be doing business on a large scale. Efforts are being made to secure a market for fruit boxes, and if successful a number o f men will bo employed In theirjmanufacture this winter. Every member who has an idle day>hould get him to the hills and cot a cord of wood for the Exchange. No need now for anybody to be idle.— Union County Farmer, La- Grande, Oregon. GENERAL NEW S. WAS PROBABLY A BIGAMIST. Deuver, Nov. 9.—Light has been thrown upon another chapter in the life history of Matt Adams, tbe alleged embezzler ot 8100,000 of I funds of Arapahoe county, and betrayer of the people’s trust. Seventeen years ago be deserted bis wife and two children in the east, nnd since has persistently refused to contribute to their sup port. A Point for Property Owners. DON'T STOP TOBACCO A jury in Judge Shqttuck’s court at Portland, Nov. 6th, awarded Mrs. Hattie B. Phillips a verdict of $375 in her suit for damages against H. D. Winters, of East Portland The plaintiff’s snit was for $5000 for damages sustained by falling through u basement door in the sidewalk on Davis street, where stands Winters’ lodging- house. The plaintiff alleged negligence on tbe part of tbe defendant. Judge Slmltuck, charging the jury, hold that the proprietor of a build ing or tbe lessee, if there was one, should be held responsible for accidents of this character to pedestrians. The court stated in substance that a person passing along the street has every reason to believe that all subways, trapdoors, etc., on the walk are kept perfectly safe, aud the owner of the property or his lessee shoo Id see that they are safe for pedestrains. ■ How to Cure Yourself W h ile Using It. "Yankee Doodle." The to,'-~oo habit grows on a man until his nervous system is seriously affected, 'impairing health, comfort and happiness. '1 o quit suddenly is too severe a shock to the system, as tobacco to an inveterate user becomes a stimulant that his system c.nitimially craves. “ Baco-Cura” is a sci entific cure fo the tobacco habit, in all its forms, carefully compounded after the formula of an eminent Berlin physician who has used it in his private practice since 1872 without a failure. It is purely veget able and Kunrunteed perfectly harmless. You can use all the tobacco you want while taking “ Baoo-Curo,” It will notify you when to stop. We give a written guarantee to cura permanently any case with three boxes, or refund the money with 10 per cent interest. “ Bnco-Curo” is not a substitute, but a scientific cure, that cures without the aid of will power and with no inconven ience. It leates the system as pure and free from nicotine as the day you took your first chew or smoke. CURED BY BACO-CURO AND GAINED THIRTY POUNDS.
