C o m m i t s C r i m e 1 » < > rl M u l l e r . Riverton, May 1, 1896. E d . H er ald : W ill you allow me space in your valuable paper to speak a few words in answer to Dona Ana. I wish to state true facts in re gard to that Riverton school meet ing; nlso to speak in behalf o f the majority o f the good people of Riverton school district Yes, the people o f Riverton district did turn out in fine style, and when the meeting was called to order the first business on docket was to locate a site for a school- house, and to levy a tax or bond the district to build a schoolhouse. It was found to be a fact that the majority o f the people wished to have the schoolhouse site located as near the middle of the district as possible, to be convenient to all scholars, but a few wanted it con venient for themselves alone, con sequently there was no vote taken on the site. Tho majority of the people did not propose to be taxed to build a schoolhouse until they knew where it would be built. Iudeed we best g o cast. D o you tbiuk, dear Dona Ana, that it would really be any great benefit to us? Why, Dona, we have had some eastern teachers here in Riverton for 8 long years and some of the children have been through their first readers and don’t know one let ter in the alphabet, and some of the senior clnsges begin at the left to work their examples! So now, dear Dona Ana, people that live in glass houses should never throw stones. Albert 8 . Hull, old, out of work, peuuiless, starving, without shelter, asked for a night’s lod giu g at the One Hundred anil Tweuty-fifth street station-house, New York. It was refused. Hall promptly broke into a show case, stole a pair o f slippers aud surrendered himself. Rather jail than starvation. Have you not some friend who j will help you to get on your feet again ?” Magistrate Flammer asked Hall in the Harlem police co u r t “ I cannot understand why a man of your intelligence, g ood ap pearance and, ns I am informed, good manners, cannot get em ploy m en t” “ You would understand if y ou had tramped the streets of this city without shelter or food us I have,” answered the unfortunate bitterly. “ I have sought work day and n ig h t Now my last cent is gon e.” He went to the workhouse.— N.
