re RESPITE FOR DURR AST. In the case of Durrant Judge Murphy has granted a stay of pro- ceedings for twenty days to give his attorneys time to prepare their application to the supreme court for a certificate of “ probable cause.” Justice Beatty, of the supreme court, was present at the time of the granting o f the respite, and from remarks he made there it is P. Bayard, ambu««udor to England, in a Hpeech delivered in Boston, Eng- lan 1, last August, ought to be shown up and denounced by every news paper in the United States, regard less of party. Here is the utterance: “ Tire president of the United States stands in tho midst of a strong, self-confident and oftentimes violent people, men who seal to have their own way. It takes a real man to govern the people of the United States.” That there is a large plutocratic class of monarchists growing up in this country is very well known to a few people, but it is not generally recognized by the masses of our American constituency. Mr. Bay ard evidently belongs to that class, and when he imagines himself out of earshot of his countrymen be does not hesitate to give expression to his monarchical sentiments. So thoroughly is he imbued with this aristocratic spirit that he looks upon the president of the United States in the same light as he views the czar of the Kussias, as autocratically governing a violent, turbulont mob, rather than as tbc chosen servant of a free people. Mr. Cleveland him self has often indicated that he holds the same views as his ambassador. The fact« arc, a plutocracy cannot flourish so successfully under a republican form of government, where the people govern themselves, a« under a monarchy, and hence this drift, by the wealthy classes, in that direction. Wo should be dere lict of our duty if we failed to lift a warning voice against the en croachment of this anti-republican sentiment. AVo proudly and indig nantly spurn tho infamous doctrine, that Mr. Cleveland or any other man “ governs” tho American peo ple; and we call upon the spirit of a Washington and a Jefferson to rise and vindicate themselves und all our Revolutionary sires from this base Blander upon our free government. We call up the spirit of a Patrick Henry to onco more inspire these “ violent” American patriots until they will rise above sordid cupidity and shout, in deafening notes, into the ears of all monarchists at home or abroad, “ give us liberty, or give us death.” The National Central Committee o f tho People’s party will meet ifi S t Louis, on January 17, 1896, for tho purpose of arranging for the national convention. Bandons Budget. Bandon, D»c. 21.— Ben Inman got pretty badly hurt some time ago while painting a building, bat is getting along nicely now. The weather at Bandon the last few dAys has been veiy stormy. L. Jacobson dually concluded to leave, and departed last Tuesday morning for Portland, but Dot until be had made several o f the break water boys happy. Editor H e i i a l d , notice is hereby given that all members of company K are requested to meet at the Presbyteriau church at 7:30 o’clock Tuesday ere, Dec. 24th, as business of importance will be transacted. Two schooners sailed in AVed- nesday and three were towed out. Mrs. E. A. McDuffeo and Ed Sumner have both been quite sick the last few days, but are better at this writing. Almost everybody is complain ing of la grip, or bad colds. There is nothing that Bandon needs worse than sidewalks. Why not spend some of the city money and build some? Several of the Bandon citizens have moved the past week into new quarters for the winter. C S. McCulloch reterned this week from Grants Pass, where he went to stay the winter. AVliy he came back aod whether he expects to return to that place, your re porter tins not had time to find out. It might be well to give you an outline of the Christmas program at Bandon. At 4 o’clock Tuesday the M ethodists will open up with a program aod distribution o f pres ents. At 7 o’clock, “ carry arms” — “ right about face” — “ forward march” to the Presbyterian church, where another program and tree awaits the arrival o f the congrega tion, tnd while there the peoplo will have the pleasure o f seeing a conple o f Baudon’s most popular young people united in marriage. At about half past 9 the G. A. It. will open np a irask ball down town, which will be no small affair of itself, for almost everybody is g:ing. On Christmas day a good time in general— talking, visiting, euting turkey nnd chickeD, etc. The Episcopalians will have a pro gram and tree at the church some time during the day, which will make three for Bandon this year. At 8 o ’clock p. m. Capt. Blum- enrother will give a free dance iu tho armory in honor o f the newly wedded couple, winch will close the Christmas festivities. R am bler . Some while since a very promi nent, able and respectable state offi cial of Colorado—Attorney-General Tarsney—was kidnaped, tarred-and- feathered and left in a lialf-mur- dered condition, by some of the broadcloth anarchists, genteel busi nessmen, clubmen and property- owners (for saloon, gambling and dive purposes, but still carrying high ltends and wearing saintly faces in daytime). This was for en forcing the laws against goldbug anarchists, and yet nothing seems to have been done in the matter of arresting and punishing these gen teel thugs for their lawlessness. Somewhat later, after Governor McIntyre of tho g. o. p. was in his seat and the dives and gamblers aud nice, gentlemanly owners of the dens were all moving along harmon iously nnd prosperously, a “ colored brother” named Marshall made a criticism on his excellency, while at a celebration nt Grcoly, and tor this he was taken ont and tarred and-fenthered. Some time has elajwed since this occurrence but no word that the outlaws have been apprehended and punished. -------- ------------ DON’T STOP TOBACCO How to Cure Yourself While Using Tobacco.
