ÜotiiiUt CUvj ¿Ticraltf. - EDITED BY TITI— W. C. T U. ABSOLUTELY PUR E LO CAL IT E M S . JJTora the National W. 0 . T . U. Bulletin.] T h e T r e e «1 H e a th . A gentleman who visited Java has sent a very singular tree to Lis sister who resides in Savannah. It is called the tree o f death. H e says that the natives described to him that there was a singular tree called the K a li Mnjah. its breath would kill birds, and even human beings. One day when he was chasing a bird o f paradise, be noticed that it dropped suddenly to the ground, under a tree. H e examined the tree, and began him- Sdlf to feel strangely, as the odors from its leaves began to be inhaled by him. H is head swam and ring ing sounds came to his ears, as though he were being chloroformed. H e hastened away from it, but pro cured a specimen and sent it to America, which, it is said, is the first one transplanted in our soil. W hat a striking illustration this is o f the tree o f death which has been planted in our fair Am erica by the distiller! I t has leaves for the blighting o f the nations. I see the young, the middle-aged, the old, chasing the birds o f pleasure and then sinking down beneath the dark shadow o f this baleful tree, to die there, never to rise again. Would that we might lay the ax at the root o f this tree!— Rev. E. S. Ufford, author o f “ Throw out the L ife L in e.” --------- »utM-»--------- And now it is Prof. Garner, the profound and patient student of the monkey language, that advises American Christians that they are but wasting their time in trying to Christianize the people o f Africa. H e can afford to penetrate to the deepest wilds o f the Dark Conti nent, shut himself in An iron cage for months at u time in order to catch a syllable now and then of a supposed Simian word, and then spend years in striving to put these isolated sounds into sentences, and to invent an alphabet, and all for what? Why, he is laboring in the interests of scieuce! But Moffatt and Livingstone and Mackay and Taylor, who consecrate their pow ers to the work o f giving the gos pel o f ttie Son o f God to the mil lions o f human beings who, in that fair and fertile continent, still sit in darkness and the shadow of death, these, forsooth, are throwing their lives away!
