People went wild about it and companies were organized to begin mining operations along the strand o f tbe golden isle. Much money was wasted in tbe enterprise. T b e suggestion to the effect that tbe rubies and garnets of these sauds might be utilized in Ibe man ufacture of abrasives is an impor tant one. In 1893 there were 1713 tons o f emery produced in this country, worth $83 per ton. The value of the emery imported dur ing tbe same year amounted to $127,767. Rubies are better than emery as a material for emery wheels. The sands nil along the coast of Oregon hold a large per centagc of magnetic iron. This is easily separated by means of mag nets, aud tho invention o f the elec tric furnace has made it practicable to smelt it. Eventually it may be come feasible to concentrate the sands for tbe iron-produciug steel of exceptionally fine quality or for certain purposes und saving the gold and platinum as by-products. ------ Tbe graduate may now calmly step aside and wait for tbe world to catch up.
