On behalf of the Woman’s Chris tian Temperance Union the super intendents of its press department desire to express cordial apprecia tion o f your valuable service in advancing the cause o f total absti nence by the publication of tem perance trutLs. At the same time vre must express our deep regret that a number of leading papers, which circulate extensively among young people and in Christian fam ilies, are doing much to purify the effeots of such teaching by adver tising certain preparations for making root beer. The pledge o f the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union is against the use o f and traffic in "all distilled, fermented and malt liquors.” The .chemist has taught us that (be fermentation o f sugar, yeast and water produces alcohol. In the manufacture o f root beer there is the fermentation of these substances flavored with the herb extracts; there must, therefore, be alcohol in it, varying in quantity aocordiug to the length o f time it stands before using. Analyses of the drink by unprejudiced and well qualified and equipped analysts, haye shown that the proportion is often larger than in malt beers, whioh no religious or literary peri odical would in these days of tem perance enlightenment think of advertising. But the small percent o f alcohol, which not even the manufacturers of the extracts deny is produced in brewing it, makes it a most insidious foe of temperance, kindling and fanning by impercep tible degrees the alcoholic appetite. Sir Benjamin Ward Richardson, the greatest of living physiologists, says of this power o f alcohol to create a taste for itself, “ So long as a man is taking even a small quantity of alcohol, so long as the system is under its influence ever so little, we find this taste always present.” We can therefore but class root beers with intoxioating beverages and use our influence to discourage their use. The “ people are gone into cap tivity” because they have no knowl edge o f these facts. And by the same ignorance the leaders o f the people— mauy church and family papers in whioh they place im plicit confidence — have caused them to err. We appeal to such papers to investigate the nature of the beverages they are adyertising as a harmless temperance drink. W e appeal to all other papers of the class addressed to help spread the knowledge o f these scientific facte, that the people who believe root beer is not alcoholic, because they make it themselves, may be undeceived, and may not, until too late, find that there is in it the «ting of the adder.
