ICooa Bar Naurs.) rFrom the N ational W . C. T . U. B u lletin .1 D o as macli good as you can, and God will see to it that you can soon do more. Prevention of intemperance is not only better than cure, but pre vention is a duty, and cure is lame, halting attempt to unde an evil which we have wilfully per mitted. —Cardinal Manning. At h conference held in Lyon», France, recently much time was devoted to the subject o f alcoholism. Dr. Bey, head physician o f the Marseilles madhouse, referred to the extension of tho plague in Marseilles, which was long known for its sobriety. The madhouse to which he was attached was suffi cient large twenty years ago for tho four departments o f Pouches du Bhone, Var, Gard, and Corse, and now it was actually filled by the single arrondissement o f Mar seilles. Bev. Talbot, of Eyota, Minnesota, at a recent meeting, made the fol lowing statement as to the amount o f money expended for liquor: “ A ton of silver dollars has a value of 130,000, and 4333 cars of silver dollars, each car to carry ten tons, are needed to carry the money which goes into the Baloons. This makes a train twenty-seven milrs long.” One hundred years ago Benjamin Franklin left $5000, which ha directed should be put at interest and allowed to accumulate for a oentury. At the end o f that time one-half the proceeds were to be used for some good public purpose by the city o f Boston, the other half to be again put out at interest, and allowed to accumulate for another hundred years, at which time the state of Massachusetts and the city of Boston Bhould di vide the amount equally for public uses. The amount to date is $700,- 000. H alf o f this sum will be used to build and equip an indue trial training school. Sorely the wise old patriot would approve this. And one cannot but remem ber one of his wishes, that it might be possible for him, after he had been dead a hundred years, to come back and revisit his former haunts, and behold what progress his then young country hnd made! Surely, it is a great advance, and nothing would delight the grand old philosopher and statesman more than to see America’s progress in science, in art, and in helpful edu cational lines. Let us hope that many men in our day will live as unselfishly as Benjamin Franklin, and as wisely lay up a good foun dation against the time to come.— Cal. Christian Advocate. The following is sent out by the officers of the National Christian Woman’sTampernnce Union: "A t John Burns’ meeting in Faneuil Hall, Boston, some one ofiered a resolntion in favor o f free speech and in opposition to authorities in Philadelphia who had taken meas ures against nn anarchist by the name of Mowbray. John Barns seconded the resolution, saying in effect: “ I do this because in E ng land we have found free speech the best antidote to anarchy. I do it because I hate anarchy and believe that it can be best overthrown by being allowed to put forth nil its venom.” Miss Willard and Lady Henry Somerset spoke in themcet- iug, eveiy word they utterod being in the interest o f social order, tem perance and peace, hut the impres sion having been made that John Burns and these ladies were in ac cord with the anarchist—although the record o f their lives is wholly against any such suppesition— the officers of the national association deem it wise to make the foregoing statement and ask the pre«s to give it geuernl circulation in the interests of justice.” W o rk W rit l» « n r .
