In Germany the problem of how to treat wife-heaters has been solved in a far wiser way than in most other countries, furthers the brutal husband must work all through the week, then turn over his wages to his wife on pay-day and go to jail Saturday night and Sunday; •bout two weeks of this sort of ex perience has a most salutary effect on the savage wife-beater. A man can not use what is called the best o f wine daily for ten years and be free from disease. What ever is in the least harmful to the human economy, when taken in ternally, whether it irritates the nerves, or only rendered them more sensitive to external impressions, or accelerates the degeneration of cell-tissue, is incompatible with healthy growth, and therefore its nse is abuse.—Journal o f Hygiene. In a recent address on “ Adult erations in Liquors,” before the Society o f Medical Jurisprudence, Albert 11. Ledonx said, speaking from the standpoint of an analytical chemist, rather than that of either a temperance reformer or advocate o f license: “The medical profes sion, as well as all temperance reformers, should never cense to make it plain that the evil lies in the alcohol in the liquors, and not in the adulterations; that the tin- fortunnts votary should not be allowed to deceive himself with the idea that if he drinks some partic ular braud, or nbstnins from nn- other, be can derive benefit, or at least escape injury. If he is injured at all, he is injured by the alcohol, if he is benefited nt all, he is bene fited by the alcohol. I trust that the society does not conclude that I nm as 8 ertniniug that there are never harmful suhstauces in our nlcoholic liquors. 1 simply take tho ground that ns compared with the alcohol their injurious effect is absolutely iusiguifienut.” p u r e Residence properties are in de mand.
