Brown has had no sympa thizers, and thongh his attorneys made a gallant fight for him, the decree of fate was against him. There is a lesson of morality to be leaned from this sad and rash act. Irown was a yonng man who had great ideas as to his importance. His ambition was to be considered a “ holy terror,” to drink wbisky and be considered a “ tongb.” He has now the opportunity o f seeing what bis actions have led him into. Truly the way o f a transgressor is a bard one. i It is the genc-al opinion that a mulch or heavy cover placed upon the soil about plants when it in ' ’■own will rotaril flow ering nnd tile maturing of fruit; yet the practice appear* to tie often unsatisfac tory. and there are resume for supposing that the philosophy of the subject is not commonly nuderstood. With a view to settling the question, apple and other fruit trees, also small fruits, wero mulch ed last winter at the Cornell nulversity station at Ithnc.v. Profeasor Bailey, after dv.e investigation o f results, arrived at these conclusions: First—The early bloom o f fruit plants depend« very largely upon the appropria tion of food stored in tbe twigs, und it it more or leaa independent o f root action. This is proved loth by direct cxi>erimenl and by r,tndy of the physiology of plants, Second—It mnst follow, then, that tho tempernture of the twig or branch must be reduced if Its vegetation is to be much retarded; or, in other words, the top of the plant, as well as the soil, must be mulched, and in practice thin is possible only with strawberries and other very low plants or those which are laid down during winter. Third—There ia danger of injuring plants by heavy mulch which is allowed to remain late in spring. If it ia desired to retard flowers or fruit by mulching, the practice should not he violent, and the plants should be carefully watchod. Fourth—Many strawberry growers are able to delay the ripening of fruit from tw o days to two weeks by mnlching, bnt a w e e k 's delay is nsnally about t b e limit of profitable results. ------------ - . e . . ------------- A C e n tfe m a n V 0RL-D » TlbÄ/lNRC und 1 have used A y e r’s H e ir V ig or, and we attribute to it the dark hair which she and I now have, while hun dreds o f our acquaint ances, ten or a dozen years younger than wo. are either gray-headed, white, or bald.
