New Orleans, Nov. 23.— The Knights of Lab >r, in convention today, adopt> 1 a lesolution pro. testing against the issue o f $50,- 000.000 bonds by the government, characterizing it as a fraud upon the toiling masses, intended solely for the benefit of the money powers and the boudholding aris tocracy. H erald : I don’t think the couDty commissioners had any right to grant or have the survey for a new road made, as the petition should have stated whether the roud went through improved or enclosed or cultivated land, and if they had the consent of R. and 8. and C. and D. and F. and A. and W. and G. aud L., etc. No, the rond passes through the improved, enclosed and cultivated lauds and not oue of the parties have given consent to have the road, as it destroys gates and fences, and fences the cattle from the river. Ho I think the best thing the county can do is to buy the south Bide of the river aud let the settlers go somewhere else, if they have noth ing to say in the matter. And I think they had better look up law in regard to laving out roads through enclosed lauds. J. C. W ilson . I T P A Y S T O H E P R E NID E NT, C l i - T r l a n « '» F « r t i i a > - E . Washington, Nov.19. -Cougrsss- man-elect Howard of Alabamn, author o f that famous tale, “ I f Christ came to Congress,” declares that Grover Cleveland is woith $4,000,000. This declaration is undoubtedly correct as fHr as it goes. I t is believed here I y peo ple closely connected with Wall street affairs that $6,000,000 would be nearer the exact figure. It is known that he has been siiigulaily successful in rsaleitate transactions since be came here. His little transaction at Red l o p alone netted him $140,000. The balk of the rest o f his wealth is'Supposed to have resulted from successful speculations iu Wall street. He has not specu lated in hie own name so far as is known, hut according to report has permitted bis friends to do so foi him. Th irm ay or may not account for certain'of his friends knowing his intention to issue another #50,- 000,000 of„honds before even the secretary o f the treasury was aware o f it himself. It is not hinted that President Cleveland has mnde nn improper use o f his position. I t is simply thought he has taken the tide nt its flood which leads to fortune. Whatever the truth o f the matter, this much is regarded everywhere ns certain: N o public man ever entered into public life so poor as did GroyerCleveland and acquired a fortune o f 8ucb great proportions as is now said to be owued by him, in so short a time.
