' Resulting in fatal seriousness, oc curred at the rock quarry on Coos river last Thursday. Superintend ent West and a Mr. Dolan (fore man) were the worst hart, the Intter dying on Thursday night. West was still alive at lost accounts. The blame is charged to the latter. It seems that preparation was made for an immense bloat Dolan was opening powder-cans in the usual manner, with a hardwood stick, but was not succeeding as rapidly as Wsat wanted him to, so he took np a pick and struck into a can, caus ing it to explode and setting off 26 more cant. Dolan was fearfully lacerated and bad bis clothes all bnrnt off before be reached the water, as be ran to the river. He then walkbd to the house, but did not survive long. West may ra- covsr. and if be does, criminal ac tion may be taken agaiust him. Uncle Jack Wood was down from his North Fork home last Tuesday snd Wednesday shopping and mar keting some. He brought down nice apples. He had some dry bides with him, but for wbioh he was only offered 2 ceuta a pound. Uncle Jack wonldn’t stand this. This suggests, that as leather is still a pretty good price, there should be a tannery started. There it plenty of material o f all kinds and a profitable business might be established. |W**t OrseaniAD.i Rufus K ing some time since found croppings o f coal on the South Fork of the Coquille river, and a bed ot petrified oyster#. The sheila were perfect in abape, bat they have since crumbled to pieces. The oysters are aa solid ae rock, and perfect in ehape. Under the oysters was a perfect mudilat o f blue mud, and over the whole wee send rock. Specimens o f tbs ooal can be seen at this officer. J. H. Bryan, who has been log ging on Catching creek, this county, met with quite a mishap last Saturday. H e battled a large 20- foot ceder log to the landiag, and it immediately commenced rolling and went off a bank 35 feet high, taking the team with it. Three of the oxen were killed end the reM moat have been badly bruised. W e are informed tbattbey were obliged to buul the dead animals off of some live ones in order to save them. Tbie is a severe blow to the logger, and uo doubt he will have plenty blocking hereafter to keep the logs in place until be detaches bis team from the same. C apt Wm. H. Harris shipped 131 boxes o f apples to San Francisco via Coos bay the first o f tbs month. The fruit was nicely assorted, and was o f Baldwin and Ballefiower varieties, free from pest or blemish, and they only netted him $31.10. They were a choice lot of apples, as everyone knows Capt Harris’ orchard produces no otbar kind. The freight on the applea were 25c per box by rail and steamer. If tbis is a fair return it ia evident that it does uot pay to ship apples from this valley to Sac Francisco, and the thousands of boxes o f apples now on the Coquille will rot instead o f being shipped, because the boxes cost 10c each, and as the average price for apples ia 23 87-100 cents, it onley leaves 13 84-100 seats for raising, picking, packing and haul ing them to the railroad station. We copy the above statement from Capt. Harris' bill which he received from the firm o f commission merchants in the city. The Co quille valley produce» the best apples in the state, ae the pests that are so common throughout the Willamette and Umpqua valleys have not made their appearance here, nod it is a pity that so much excellent fruit should go to waste, however we believe that it would be a very wise plsn for the farmers o f Ceos county to keep a good business man in San Francisco every autumn who would handle the produce sent from this section, as there is bo doubt that commis sion merchants reap the reward justly due the producer.
