Six traiu-rol>l*t rs attacked n “ blind” train near St. Joseph, Mo., a few nights ago, supposing it would be tin' regular express train which would be taking out a large Hinount o f treasure. Instead of the treasure train, however, the author ities had information that there was an iutcuded attack from robbers, hence the other train was made up. a posse of well-armed citizens se creted upon it and the train started out on the regular train's time. At a certain point it was attacked by the train-robbers, when the posse opened tire on them, killed two and finally captured a third. These happened to be not tramps, nor reg ular outlaws, nor persons who had any occasion to become outlaws, so far as the netd of this world's goods was concerned, but they turned out to be the idle, dissolute sons of well -to-do parents, who wanted to win fame in that particular ti.ld of danger and desperadoism. The first telegi •unis came in appproval of the official shrewdness which put so sudden u quietus uj on outlawry, hut then it was thought the young devils were “ only tramps. " or ‘•com mon people,” or idle persons, re cently thrown out of employment, hence it was a good riddance. Rut now the telegraph brings a different story. The posse was too hasty; they didn't lay down tin ir arms and appeal to these nice young men— these sons of reputable, worthy and wealthy fathers— whose parents did not know they were out and in need o f funds to continue their lit tle spree on. No, it appears now the parents have a word to say against the officials for doing their duty, because it happened to be their sons instead o f thtar neigh bors’ sons; and the lawyers have grown sympathetic, for they have lost fees for a defense of th e e early deceased youth, young ras cals whose clothes indicated their manhood and whose good names were inherited. A firm in San Francisco lias brought suit against the stockhold ers of the Pacific bank to recover $o*#i,4(»0.i)0, money deposited in the bank at the time of the failure. In Henderson's “ (.lanleiiing For l ’roiit” the cause of the excr»?sc«*nco known as club root is s;;i i to bo an insect, and this is perhaps the most |#opular theory. The remedy suggested *y Henderson is a heavy dressing ol‘ lime in fall and spring. Professor 1,. 11. P.ailey distinctly claims that club root is not due to the maggot, but to a fungus, iiis advice is to burn the roots as soon as tlit* disease appears, alternate crops and avoid the use of stable manures. A New Jersey farmer, writing in the New York W orld, says that the cause is an insect which deposits its eggs in the root or lov > r part of the stem while the plant is quite young. These eggs soon hatch out, the larva* or maggots eatthebarki.fT around the top or prin cipal root, thus cutting off tia* connec tion between the root and stem. Still the root continues t<> grow, forming a callosity or tumor with tin* substance that nature intended to nourish the plant. In this the maggots revel and increase in number .ill the plant finally dies of the paraMtes. This is club root, or heading in the ground. The time to prevent the ravages of this insect is at the time of sowing the seed, in preparing the s#'.:d bed. This seed 1 m d ne d not necessarily be rich. Any good, ordinary garden soil will do, but after the se# »i bed is dug and leveled off a good coating < f wood ashes must bo spread over t h * plot and well raked in. Then proceed to sow the seeds, either in drills or beds, whichever is found most convenient. If manure was applied before t-lie ground was dug. it would help to keep the ground soft, which is a desideratum, but in any raso these ashes will cause the plants to form a mass of roots that when pulled up will hold on to a ball of earth, or which will be for the i^jost part ashe/, and this mass greatly assists the growth after trans planting. These ashes not only prevent the plants being stung in the s •< 1 bed. but prevent them being bitten afterward, and so far as d u b root is concerned no otic need fear any danger from it. This plan holds good with nil the cabbage tribe. Lime, salt and soot are all good, but not effectual. The muriate of potassium or potash st'cins to be the great preventive remedy in this ease and may give a clew to other important uses of this salt to agriculture. By the above plan a dozen consecutive crops of cabbages, etc., may be grown on tin* same plot without be ing attacked by what is called club root, according to this farmer.
