E.oLS, ¡v is . C a n ille tí ib i ¿ m it T l'K S D A Y . I Klt. 17 , o it i:v t iii : 1 S 85 . i. %\v. This is a first-class motto when law is combine.» with justiee. There are multitudes of good people who believe that it is la tter to obey a bad law than k is lo op pose its execution. In watching the course of events and listening to the sayings of intelligent men on the same, we believe that we chronicle a change in the senti ment of the people, with legard to both the bad laws and their au thors. Did the American colonics rebel against the unjust laws oi Great 1 »l itian for one other pur pose but that of surrendering themselves, bouud neck and heels, hand and foot, to another power, begotten in the purlieus of beg gary and corruption, and which thrives on eleemosynary subsist ence? Was the ulterior object of the Revolutionary Fathers in rid ding their country of one king, the final establishment of a house of kings, in which the laws would be made and the rights of the people trampled under foot bv paid tools that are subjected to the whims and caprices of a class of human vulture? A re we to be ruled by an obligarchy composed of such men as Gould, Huntington, Crock- er and Stand ford? Are they to dictate what shall he the law of the fund, and their paid satellites be permitted to give it effect? i hat is the question tit issue now. I hey are rolling themselves into the United States senate on the chariot wheels of gold. They are elected to represent a state while they nb. jure its citizenship. I nder the guise of law, they steal, and by their own utterance they are prov- ed to be liars. Tame submission to these wrongs is servility. Agi- tation is necessary. JT.e life of a man, aye, a thousand men, is noth- ing when compared to the welfare and happiness oF a great nation. I f we are to have reform it must come quickly, otherwise, it will be too late. Vanderbilt is quoted as saying: “ D—n the public.” Let the public respond by actions that v ill upset his damnable theories. I f the public will but put their streugth to the wheel of reform, there need be no fears as to tin* re sult. The wheels of progress can not long be obstructed by the ef forts of those whe have made our sister state the hot-bed of despot ism. They must not he allowed to lag in the interest of Crocker and his pals. Peaceable reform, if we canobtfiin it, ’ is to be desired. The people can not be suppressed m an ^ * 11 . honest endeavor to obtain just laws, if they will but make an united ef fort. The day of the tyrant is past, and just principles must win. There are none that have less respect for the law than lawyers. This is, in a great measure, true. They will harangue on the majesty Washington, IVI*. 10 'I lio Lami (¡nmt Forfeiture hills ami the pro- postal legislation relating to the ilion and * \ atari Paci tic roads ave brought heio an unusualiy n i n n i m i * of i i ( I railroad ’ m 11 i * i ni 11 lobbyists, 11 it it !»■ i «d u arire a numner who .haunt the corridors of the cap- itol from day to day. There is a Nicaragua treaty lobby that is still aetivo despite the recent vote of the Senati». Then there is a Spanish treaty lobby that is reported to he encased lavishly in the dinner line. There is also a big pension lobby •uve .lav an nignt einterest of the Mexican Pension bill with the Senate aim mlments. Tlnue is, ;ts usual, a steamship subsidy lobby ever reckless and persistent, There is an equally persistent 1 . bby working in the interest of the Pdair Educational bill, and there are many liumer. us smaller lob bies whose members can be seen every day in the enpitoJ mid about the hotel corriders.
