The aim» pie therapeutics o f the Patriarchical era, when herbs ** for heahog the na- tions” were the only tuedieiuc io use, find li’ tle favor with the medicaLprofes. sioa o f the day. Yet at.the early pe riod of the world’s history the ordinary term o f humau life was at least eight times lunger than it is uow. I t is there- lore manifest that the stamina o f man has seriously declined in the lapse of ages. I t is a scientific fact that, during this process o f human degeneration and de* cuy an immense number o f powerful poisous have beeu introduced into the medical repertoire, while the mild veg etable system of treatment exclusively practiced when the world was young, has been in a great measure abandoned by the medical profession. This is a singular coincidence, aud it suggests the possibility ot a direct connection be. twt-eu the physical deterioration o f the species, and the wholesale administra* tion o f deadly miucral and other drugs. It may well be doubted whether the mineral salts and oxyds, and the no less dangerous alkaloids, wtrch chemistry has added to the pharmacopoeia, have uot destroyed more lives than all the diseases they have been prescribed to cure. Oue thing, at least, is certain— viz : that the average term o f human existence has beeu shortened since the days when the vegetable kingdom was the only medical dispensary known to mankind. The truth is— and sensible people are becoming more alive to it every day— that the world is ovcrdoctored. The principles o f medication are simple; but they have been so befogged by tech, uicalities, so mystified by profes ional verbiage, that oue half the community fancy tliev cau neither he interpreted nor applied except by persons who have been ta u g h t to clothe the living truths o f science in dead languages. I t is not to the interest of “ the Faculty” that the theory aud practice o f medicine should he simplified and popularized, aud therefore the public couceive but tittle light from tV.t quarter- To prevent criitA is one o f the great ends o f civil law, and to prevent disease should be one o f the grand objects of medical science. It is better to protect than to cure, and much easier. Vital power is the natural antagonist of all the influences that militate against health — whether they exist 'in the air we breathe, iu the water wc drink, or tlie objects with which wc c> iue iu contact, ur in ourselves. Without a sufficiency ot this resistant principle, there can he no reasonable hope o f tsc-apiug prevail ing epidemics, or of enjoying even un* der the most favorable external circum- tuiico*. an immunity from sickness and pain. This tact being established, the next question is, how shall a deficiency in physical and constitutional vigor he supplied ? Instructed by the experi- eu.e o f twenty years, and sustained by the testimony of thousands of individ uals of both sexes; hailing from all paits of the world, wc reply that llostetter’s Stomach Bitters is the only medicine that can he fully relied on a» a protec tive and preventative tonic and alterna tive in ail climates and under all con tingencies. With a system strength en! d and fortified by the use o f this in. vigoratit, no one who po.-sesses common prudence need fear the effects of maK aria. It is the best safeguard agaiust infection at proseut known. It produces appetite ; it promotes digestion ; it pre vents constipation : it regnhites the flow o f bile ; it strengthens the nerves, it purifies the animal fluids; it dears the braiu ; and, the vehicle o f its medical properties being a pure diffusible stim ulant, their influence is extended to every portion o f the system. Mere alcoholic stimulants, though administer ed largely in no dical practice, are not in themselves medicines ; hut they per vade the whole organization more cer tainly and swiftly than anything else tnat can he given. They are quickly taken up by the absorbents, and there is not a fiber of the body between the crown ot the head and the sole of the foot wliieh is exempted from their in fluence. Hence a spiritous stimulant is the best medium for conveying to all the organs and members o f a feeble or disordA-ed system the means whereby that system is to be recruited and reg ulated. I t is for this purpose that the alcoholic elements is used in tho pre paration o f Hostctter’s Stomach Bitters. It is simply the instrument by which the medical virtues of the preparation are carried to their objective points and rendered active. It is almost necessary to fijdl th« attention of dyspeptics io a medicine which is everywhere recoguized as the standard specific for Indiges tion In every town in the United States which contains a drug store, or a store in which drag» are sold, it is known as a remedy for 8,onja^ complaints of every class, from simple “ * ,u. cy up to the most obstinate chronic torpt 7 of that most important organ.
