I f the movement recently in.iug- urafe bv the merchants proves success ful. all o f this valuable trade will be lost to San Frauciso, and the commercial importance o f the city materially diniio- i-bed. Already several ships have soiled from New York, laden with, gen eral merchandise, direct for 1’ortlaud, and preparations are y:aking lor ship ping all the goods required for that market. I f one cargo can be taken direct to Portland, a dozen can, and as it will cost no more to send a ship to that i lace from New York than it does to send one here, the probabilities are that B orlan d will soon cease to pur chase in this market, while the grain and ether produce o f Oregon will be ex ported direct from Portland, instead o f through this port. It will thus be seen that a valuable portion of our trade is seriously throate* ed. W’ ith the exhor. hitunt port charges ruling here, it is folly to expect our trade from seeking other channels, and in this matter our merchants have been woefully blind to their own and the interest o f the city. The Chamber o f Commerce ha> steadily opposed all movements for increasing communication to and from this city, and by its course in relation to the city front, iias assisted in materially increasing wharf and dock charges to a frightful degree. The difforence in port and whart charges in San Francisco and Portland is enough iu favor ot the lat ter to amouut to a fair profit on a gen. eral cargo o f merchandise. People may fancy that tlieColumbiaBar offers serious obstructions to vessels from New York. Not so. WTith g»od tug boats those obstructions can be readily overcome, and vessels taken into Portland with as little risk as they are brought into this port. Our merchants and busiuess men .-hould look into this matter, and adopt vigorous measures, or else our comrner. cial supremacy will be destroyed. Trade here is dull enough already. W hat will it be i f we lose the trade o f Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, with the city debarred o f quick and easy modes o f communication wtth all parts of the interior l — S. F- CulL MARRIED.
