A gentleman who was in Washington
at the time, informs us why it was that
'Grant failed to call on the President,
as he agreed, to let him know his de­
cision in regard to tho War Office at
the time he surrendered it to Stanton.

him drunk/an$ in this condition ex­
torted from him a promise to betray

to effect a radical and peimanect cure or make
no charge.
