It seems that some scoundrels in jail at Olympia fell out ami exposed each other. His name was Wideen, a me« chanic of Portland. One Wilson and a half-breed, named St. Martin, killed him with a club and robbed his body of three or four hundred dollars, the result of a summerVwork at Tacoma. A sack, containing his hooks, letters and clothing, has bceu found, aud there is a fair prospect of justice being vin- •cuted on the perpetrators of the foul utrage. Mrs. Wideen, his widow, lias < ne to Monticello to obtain the body aud pursue an examination of the affair. — Dr. Robert Newell died at Lewis ton Nov. 14th. He was born in Zanes ville, Ohio, in 1807, and wis one of the last of the early pioneers who crossed tho Iloeky Mountains in 1S05, and for a few years lived at the Lapwai He settled at Champoog, Marion county, in 1842, and was one of the first Legis- l iture ot Oregon called together under the Provisional Government. No one’s name is more familiar to the people of Oregon than that of Dr. Newell. He was a member of the Legislature of Oregon in 18GU, and was appointed Iudian Agent for the Nez Pcrcez In dians, over whom he has for thirty years exercised great influence. lie leaves a large family of children, and one sister, residing iu Umatilla county, Oregon.
