F I R E S I D E M IS C E L L A N Y . "When the Leaves are Turning Brown.” BT FLORENCE PERCT. Never is my heart so gay In the budding month of May, Never does it heat a tune Half so sweet in bloomy Jane; Never knows such happiness A i on such a day as this, When October dons hef crown, And the leaves are turning brown. Ureathe, sweet children, soft regrets For the vanished violets ; Sing, you lovers, the delights Of the glorious Suunnor nights: Never in the Summer hours On my way such radiance showers As from heaven falls softly down When the leaves are turning browu. ¿raid your girdles, fresh and gay, Children, in the bloom of M ay; Twist your chaplets in young June, Maidens, they will fade full soon; Twine ripe roses, July red, Lovers, for the dear one's head; I will weave my richer crown When the leaves are turning brown ! —... ...... — ■■ ■■■— -... M a r r ie d M en — “Jenny Ju ne” thus discourses about married m en: Married nun ate of two kinds—¿rood and bad. The bad married man ill- treats his family in every way, and gen- crally ends by eloping with somebody and leaving his wife to earn a living by tine needle-work. l$ut the «rood mar ried man—well, he is not madly in love nny more, but he believes that there was never such a woman as his wife. He does not see Time’s changes in her face; she is always young to him. Kvery baby binds them closer to each other. There is an expression in a good married man’s face that a bachel or s cannot hare. It is indescribable. He is a little nearer the angels than the prettiest young fellow living. You can fee that his manly breast is a pillow tor somebody’s head, and that little fingers ull h is whiskers. When some one f as said , H u sb a n d , an d o th e r suuie J'apa, a seal is set upon his forehead. No one—no woman at least—ever mis takes the good married man for an in stant. I t is only the erratic one who leaves you in doubt. The good one can protect all the unprotected females — lift pretty girls over gutters, talk to them iu cars, aud make himself gener ally agreeable, and yet never leave a doubt on any mind that there is a pre cious little woman at home worth all the world to him. Some women like the bad married mao, and delight in making his wife jealous. I hate him. The good married man on whom I could not make “an impression” if I died for it, is the one for me. I dis like the married man who could fall in love with any other woman, as much as I do the bachelor who couldn’t. T he W ay of the W o r l d — So lately dead; so soon forgotten !—’Tis the way of the world. Men take us by the hand, and áre anxious about the health of our bodies, and laugh at our jokes, and we really think, like the fly on the wheel, that we have something to do with the turning of the earth. Some day we die and are buried. The sun does not stay for our funeral; ev erything goes od as usual; we are not missed on the street; men laugh at jokes; one or two hearts feel the wounds of affection ; one or two memo ries hold our names and forms; but the crowd moves in the daily circle, and in three days the great wave of time sweeps over out daily steps and washes tout the last vestige of our lives. Nothing annoys a man more than to be eagerly questioned when he comes home tired. Give him a noatly-served dinner, or a pair of easy slippers and a cup of tea, and let him cat and drink in peace, and in time he will tell you, of his own proper notion, all you wish to know. But if you begin the attack too soon, the chances are that you will be rewarded by curtly-spoken monosyl lables. Put down this piece of practi cal wisdom in your note-book, girls; it will serve you well some day. Perhaps the largest class of ¡„valnls who have sought and obtained the happiest results from Dr Walkers \ eo s t a b l e V i n e g a r B it t e r s , include those whoso indescribable com plaints, for want of a better name, are known by the general term “ Dyspepsia.” Even the most delicate find immediate relief by a prudent use of the “ Bitters, tor their penetrating prop erties search, cleanse and invigorate every por tion of the human organism, correcting its dis eased action, and restoring its healthy vitality. As a coniequence of these properties, the inva lid is astonished to find his health and energy restored by a remedy at once so simple and in viting. __________ r Ask your neighbor to subscribe for the T imes instead oí borrowing it, thus “tohiseling” the printer out of his labor. Humorous Sayings and Doings. —Recently a small party of ladies and gentlemen were laughing over the sup* posed awkwardness attending the dec laration of love, when a gentleman re marked that if he ever offered himself he would do it in a collected and busi ness-like manner. “ For instance,” he continued, addressing himself to a lady present, “ I would say, Miss --------- , I have been two years looking for a wife. I am in receipt of two thousand dollars a year from my business, which is daily on tho increase. I admire you the most—indeed I love you, and would gladly make you my wife.” “ You flatter me by your preference,” good- i.humoredly replied M iss---------, to the 1 surprise of all present; " I refer you to my father.” “ Bravo!” exclaimed the gentlemen. “ Well, I declare!” said the ladies in chorus The lady and gentleman were married a few weeks since. Wasn’t that a modest way of coming to tho point, end a lady-like manner of taking a mau at his word ? — “ My dear, what shall we have for dinner today V* “ One of your smiles,’’ replied the husband, 1 can dine on that any day. “ But I can’t,” said the wife. “ Then take this,” said he, giving her a kiss, and departed for his office. He returned to dinner. “This steak is ex cellent,” said he, “ what did you pay for it? ” “ What you gave me this morning, said she. “The deuce you d id !” — A lady who has been reading law, is in the most fearful and agonizing doubts regarding her marital condition. She says “lotteries arc illegal, and mar riage is the greatest lottery in life.” —“ I would not be a woman, for then I could not love her,” said Montague. Lady Montague says. “ The ouly ob jection I havo to being a man is that I should have to marry a womau.” — An Irish judge, in Hartford, Cono., on learning that a prisoner was unmar ried, said it was “ a good thing for your wife.” — A little girl hearing the remark that all people had once been children artlessly inquired: “ Who took care of the babies ?” — Imitate the example of the loco motive.— lie runs along, whistles over his work, aud yet he never takes any thing but water when he wants to “ wet his whistle.” — To do the thing properly in New York at a wedding, the bride must have eight bridesmaids, and a hundred dollar poodle besides the one she mar ries. — “ What did the Israelites do after they crossed the Bed Sea ?” asked a Superintendent of a Sunday School. “ They dried themselves/’ said a shrill voiced little girl. — Speaking of ttie bill for civil mar riages, a lady writes to Punch in behalf of a bill for civility after marriage. — At a recent printer’s festival, the following toast was given : “ Woman —she is always in favor of a well-con ducted press.” — Make a sheep of yourself and the wolves will certaiuly eat you up. — “The way of the transgressor is hard.” No wonder—because it is tra velled so much. — “Won’t you take half of this apple ?” said a pretty damsel. “ No, I thank you, I would prefer a better half.” She blushed and referred him to papa. — The financial editor of the Ben nington Banner reports: Marriages, dull; engagements, depressed; court ships, good and prim e; scandal, over stocked; belles, plenty; beaux, scarce and of poor quality. —The mau who always leaves church before service is over, in speaking of au “ancient” sinitle lady, said she was “ fearfully maid.” — “ Why should we celebrate Wash ington’s birthday more than mine?” asked a teacher. “ Because ho never told a lie 1” shouted a little boy. — Have you a sister ? Then love and cherish her with a holy friendship. If you have not a sister of your own. then love somebody elsc’s sister. W E S T -S I D E S T O R E ! FARMERS’ STORE! M AIN S T R E E T , KOLA. B . She, her sister-in-law and four of her daughters were married in this self same pair of stockings. She has yet a beautiful, blooming unmarried daughter, who declaims she, too, will yet stand as a bride in those same dear old stockings provided she gets married before the death of her mother, who, by the way, is carefully preserving them to be buried in.
