S chool E xhibition .— A n invitatila Ima led at this office yesterday, during oar temporary absence, to be present at the Academy at 1J p. m. to witness something "còme off.” Always on tbo qui vivo for an item (a scarce commodity in this rural region), we went, and were very agreeably surprised to see the schoolroom filled with as promising-looking specimens o f the rising generation as can bo seen anywhere. There are over seventy pupils attend the school at present, bat with the exception o f one or two boys verging on manhood, and about a dozen young ladies just blooming into woman- hood, tho school consists o f juveniles between five and twelve years of age. Mr. Robb states, however, thst the older m«le schollars are not yet through with their harvest work, but will soon return to their studies at tho Academy. This institution is presided over by Mr. B. Robb, a very efficient tutor, assisted by Miss Lettio Eckleson, who is reputed to be an ac complished young lady and well qualified for the position. After being shown to a seat, the courteous principal informed us that tho occa sion was simply th*» usual monthly review, or rehearsal, as ¡1 might be appropriately termed, for the benefit of the parents o f the pupils ; but as some o f the senior pupils bad prepared and proposed publishing a paper within the pale of of the institution, a more general invitation was exrended, so that those who telt interested in the causo of education might ho able to judge its merits. Tho exercises commenced wi h a lively little air sung by a choir composed of nine young ladies, (forming, as they grouped, a charming yet modest boquetof youthful f> male loveliness); then followed a de< tarnation by a bright, open countenanced little fellow, who was very willing hut rather defective in mem ory ; then more music; another recitation ; then came the chief feature of the entertainment— i be reading o f the Rulla* Tribute by the edit ress (we presume). Mi.-s L>zzie Ellis. The sa lutatory was brief, yet comprehensive— modest, yet pungent —earnest, yet witty. Among a ra> riety of other spicy effusions was an alphabet ical rhyme, in which forno of our townsfolk, both married and single, were bandied without gloves. We came in for a share o f it, for which we hold be fair editress responsible, ond shall demand satisfaction the first opportunity that offers. After reading several interesting articles the reader rested, and more music ami declamation filled up the interval. The read ing was then resumed and continued to the close of No. 1 of the Ti-ibute. More music and declamation followed, and tho exercises were tbeu brought to a close by the choir singing that exquisite melody “ Home, Sweet Home. In o ir judgment a very large proportion of the contents of the paper %bore unmistakable evi dences of female authorship. Miss Ellis is an excellent reader, btlt she evidently was not fa miliar with the style of some o f the manuscript, and probably bad not sufficient time to become so. However, taking it altogether, she did ad mirably. There were many visitors present, ladies and gentlemen (but we are sorry to «nv very few o f the parents o f the pupils), and ail seemed delighted with the entire performance, which reflected much credit on teacher« as well as the pupi s. We hope to ei jo y the privilege o f attending these rehearsals often hereafter. Eulgm a No. 5. OREGON NEWS. SPECIAL NOTICES. I am composed o f fourteen letters.
