I t is rumored that the steamer Presi
dent will leave Portland for Coo« bay
and way porta in the near future. We
cannot get any confirmation of the ru
mor, hut hope that the Portland mer
chants will wake up and secure a
permanent steamer on the Coos hay
route. Atiout seven years ago Portland
discovered Coos hay, ami at irregular
intervals since that time there haa been
steamer communication between tlie
bay and that place, and although tlie
Coos hay merchants have shown a wil-
lingnens to trade with Portland, they
have been handicapped by the fact that
if an order was given for goods there
was not any certainty as to the delivery
of the same, unless by way of San
Francisco. We understand that there
is at present lying in ttie Portland ware
house quite a large lot of goods marked
for tlie bay, but there seem« to lie no
move ma*te by tlie merchant« of ttiat
town to deliver goods. How they ex
pect to do business on Coos bay under
existing conditions is a puzzle.

After several delays from various
causes ttie Bella started on her first
trip Tuesday, Nov. 23rd. The Robert»
towed a ecow load oi rock down the
river early in the morning and went out
acroaa the bar to ascertain the depth of
water before trying to take out the
schooner. On her return to Florence
just before arriving at the wharf the
gave three whistles aa a signal that
conditions were favorable for tlie Bella
to get out in aafety. Nearly all tlie men
in town and seiaral ladiee gathered on
the wharf during the few minutes oc
cupied in taking on a supply of wood
for the Rohurts and many went down
to see tlie fine vessel cross tlie bar and
hoist liar sails for her first voyage.
Some hard work waa done in tlie laat
few minutes to get some freight on
board for shipment. About ten o’clock
Captain Johnson of the Roberta gave
orders to let go all lines and both tug
and schooner were soon moving toward
the ocean, tlie latter with («.m ast flying
and dipping her flag in farewell salute.
The bar waa croaaed without mishap
after which the hawser was cast off
and tlie Bella departed on her maiden
voyage.
She carries qnite a valuable cargo,
consisting among other thing, of apples,
lumber, several thousand pounds of
wool, fifty to sixty tone of chitteu bark,
several hundred barrels of sail salmon
and tlie entire season’s pack of canned
salmon from tlie Florence cannery.
We do not know how soon she will
return tiers but are informed that the
prospect ia that the shipping of lumbar
from tbe Siualaw will begin again be
fore long and that she w ill probably be
employed in that trade.
