PORTLAND, OR
A storia , Or., Nov. 19.—The British
ship Swanmore, which arrived in this
afternoon from San Francisco, after a
passage of 18 days, had a narrow escape
from becoming a total loss otf False Til
lamook head, yesterday afternoon, and
would undoubtedly have gone ashore
but for tlie arrival of tlie steamer W. II.
Harrison on Iter way from Nehalem for
this city. It seems the Swanmore ar
rived otf tlie lightship about 3 o’clock
Saturday afternoon and finding no tug
or pilot stood off to tlie southward, a
wind having sprung up from tlie north
east. Early Sunday morning tlie wind
died away, and tlie Swanmore found
lierseif enveloped in a thick fog, and
being unable to locate their bearings
were completely lost until they were
startled to bear a noise that always
causes the sailors’ blood to run cold, tlie
roaring of the breakers on tlie beach.
The anchor was at once dropped and 35
fathoms of chain run out. Here they
remained until 8:30, when a light off
shore wind sprung up, and tlie ship’s
anchor was slipped. They stood direct
ly off shore for about eight miles, and
the wind again failed them. Again tlie
vessel drifted toward the breakers, and
their dull, roaring sound was plainly
audible, when a second breeze sprung
up and tlie Swanmore was headed to-
ward the open sea. By tliis time tile
fog had lifted and tlie crew of the Swan
more could easily distinguish tlie rugged
and perpendicular clifl of Cape Falcon.
At 3 o’clock they were nearly eight
miles off shore, when they were again
becalmed, and commenced drifting shore
ward. Pilot Thomas Neill, who was on
board the Harrison, gives the following
particulars of tlie Swanmore’s escape:
“ We crossed tlie Nehalem bar at 3 p.
in. yesterday and found tlie fog thicker
than it bus been outside for a long time
past. Immediately after crossing, Cap-
lain Schrader saw tlie topmasts of a
large vessel looming up above the fog-
bank, which entirely shut off from view
tlie vessel itself. Captain Schrader head
ed the Harrison for the vessel, which
proved to be the Swanmore. She was
about half a mile outside the breakers
and drilling rapidly toward tlie beach.
Her starboard anchor and chain were
gone and distress signals were flying.
Captain Schrader soon had the ship’s
steel liawser made fast, and towed tlie
imperiled vessel about 14 miles off
shore, parting company with her at 11 :30
last night and promising to send a tug
out as soon as lie reached tliis port.”
When the Harrison arrived at tlie
scene of tlie occurrence, the Swanmore'»
boats were lowered, the crew’s clothes
aboard, and everything ready to leave
tlie ship as soon as slie struck. Fortun
ately, the weather was calm and a light
northeast wind blowing....To these cir
cumstances and the Harrison’s timely
appearance tlie Swanmore's safety is
dne. Captain Schrader, of the Harrison,
claims tliat no bargain was made; in
fact, there was no time for striking liar-
gain». On the other hand, Captain
Greenbaum, of the Swanmore, claims
that a bargain was made for $900.
