p re tty scene on a street car. T here was
an old negro w om an— a very black old
w om an—whose fa c e , besides being black,
w as pockm arked. No dou b t a superfi­
cial observer w ould have called her re­
pulsive, b u t there w as a sw eet and kind­
ly look in her eyes and a benevolent ex­
pression a bout her black features which,
as you looked a t her. gave you a g lim p s e
of som ething beautiful.
A t her side, w ith bis sw eet child face
to w a rd tho window, knelt a little w hite
boy—a handsom ely dressed little chap
w ith blond c u rls and blue eyes, lie
asked the old black woman questions
now and then, which she answ ered with
a deep, grave, kind voice, and sho called
th e little fellow “ honey.”
Presently this little C aucasian leaned
over tenderly tow ard tho old woman,
p u t his arm lovingly around her neck
and laid his pink and white cheek against
her black face. T hat o bliterated every
b it of repulsiveness tho wom an m ight
have had with every person of sentim ent
in th a t car. To this little boy the old
black face was entirely b eau tifu l, be­
cause it was all love. The beauty that

This bird was im ported from C hina by
O. N. Denny some eight years ago. .Six
p air were let loose on P ettersoii bu tte,
about four miles from Sodaville, Or.,
and the clim atieal conditions and coun­
try beiug favorable ami being protected
by a strict law for six years tiiey have
m ultiplied rapidly and now are one of
our m ost common gam e birds. In fact,
they m ultiplied so rapidly th at long be­
fore the six years’ protect ion had c e a s e d
th»' fan n ers complained bitterly that the
birds were a serious dam age to their
grain and garden», and m any birds
w ere killed, but in this 1 think they were
m istaken, for in my exam ination of m any
stom achs a t all seasons of the year I
found but Very little grain as their l'»n>d,
b u t m any wild seeds, bugs, grasshop­
pers, etc.
1 think th a t the farm ers have realized
th is also to some »xtent, as nearly all
h.ave now po> ted trespass in d ic e s for their

land, better known as “ Tim othy Tit-
com b.” D uring the service of oneof the
large churches in Springfield, Mass., a
heav y electric storm came up, and oneof
the genth m en of the choir set out to
secure an om nibus to tak e the ladies

land w as gallan tly helping her into the
