EXCELSIOR Who is Eugenie* 8 Father ! A correspondent of the Tribune says : The Journal Oflicile, the other day, contained the announcement that the Court would go into mourning for eight days, beginning with Sun day, July 3, for Jerome Bonapnrte-Patterson, who died recently at Baltimore. Meanwhile, no official announcement has been made as to when, if ever, the Court willge into mourn ing fur tbe Empress’ father, who also died a ebort time ¿go. If it is possible to speak with certainty on such a matter at any time, it may be permitted us to believe that, iu tbe death of Luid Clarendon, the present Em press of tbe French has tbe right to mourn a father, who, although the fact was a notorious one both in England aud France, never, so great was his mudesty, allowed himself to eluim in public tnat distinguished honor. From all that I can learn, this story has the strongest claims to be believed. It is not ot the same category as ihe tales that give so many and so noble fathers (to say nothing ot the ignoble ones, like Geu*-ial Fleury for ex ample) to the poor little Prince Imperial; it is said to be believed iu high places. For my part, if it be true, I think the Empress happy that if she cannot, and she certainly cannot be congratulated oh her mother, she may at least take some comfort in knowing that she had a father she need not be ashamed of. But, what a Court, where rake ns you may iu the annuls of either side ot the bouse you come upon Dothiug, but such stories as these! THAN THE Ou Oregon street, Jacksonville. DIS'OVERY THE BUCKEYE. The of Buckeye, from this is principally were first broug t to notice by Mr. Conrov, who, while residing in Anderson’s Valley, suffered so severely from Rheumatism, that he could move neither hand nor foot. He had known the natives to use the nut as a specific, and tried it with great success on himself. The potency of its effects as a drug is exemplified in its singular operations on entile, by which, when taken, it causes abortion in those animals that are with young when thennt is eaten. Squirrels, ns if aware of its medicinn) pro. perties, eat but half of it, leaving the other halt untasted. So wonderful is the efficacy of this production <»f nature, in cases of Rheumatism, that many of the old settlers and early Californians subject to the disease, carry the nut about their persons, not only as nn antidote, hut as a preventive. It seems Beecher had observed the injustice of obliging men to work on Sundays, and preached one of bis sermons about it. The next day, while riding in a street car to Fulton Ferry, he en tered into conversation with the driver, and —YOUR— asked him if he did not think that some way might be adopted to dispense with the need of running the cars all day Sunday, Being entirely ignorant of the name of his interro gator, the driver made him a trunk reply ; “ Yes sir, I think there might. But I’ve B uy the WOOLLEN GOODS manufactured no hopes of it so long as they keep that d—d by the Beecher theater open in Brooklyn. The cars have to run to accomodate that.” ROGUE RIVER VALLEY It is hardly necessary to add that the re mark was a home thrust, and was considered •0 good a joke that Beecher told it himself.
