è o • • I — The Anti-Fly Crusade Aiwtng the m toy '‘ant»" ci ts.ides, otic against the fl» merits approba tion. Unless the doctors and germ scientists are all wrong, tbe fly is not only an anno\ ing but a dangerous little beast. Physicians, scientist*, ento'iiologists. hygienists, board* oi health pure food societies, anti tuberculosis societies, and even civic improvement leagues and business men's associations, all denounce the fly and urge pe.-ple to make war upon it. The reasons h ive been stated re— |>eatedly in this paper. Flies are bted in filth, and they carry multi tudinous disease get ms on their feet, with which, if given opportunitv, they settle on all sorts of food. It has been proven that they carry the bacilli of typhoid, tuberculosis, it» testinal diseas» s and dysentery. It is a disseminator of disease, anti therefore an enemy of human lite It is an insidious, lurking yet an la- cious pest. It cannot be exter minated, but it can be kept out of most houses, with vigilant care One man has computed th it the descendants of one fly diirin^a sin gle season, if they should all live, might number over 8,000,000.000. Perhaps he got to multiplying and forgM to stop, but flies do multipl} so rapidly that everv possible elf >rt should be made to leave exposed no oftal or filth which can become a breeding place for them. Much of the impure milk is ma le so by the fly. It is liable to leav» disease germs in any h>»fd with which it comes in contact. It issi.mc trou ble and a little expense to keep flit s out of a house, but drugs, doctors and undertakers are more expensive anti troublesome. The Merchants' Assoc ation of New York has issued the following directions for protection against the fly: “Keep flies away from tbe sick Allow? no decaying material t> ac cumulate on your premises Destroy all refuse or cover it with lim * 01 kerosene. Screen all footl, b >:lt in houses and stores. Keep all gat b »g< receptacles covered anil the vessel« sprinkled with lime or oil Keep t'i stable manure tn a vault or pit, ami sprinkled with kerosene, lime <>1 other preparations See that yout sewerage is tight. Four kerosene in the drains. Screen al! windows a" I doors. The less the number of flies, the greater will be mankind's peart- health and happiness Hence the anti fly crusade is worth while It is everybody’s duty, to himself and others, to do what he can to get rid of flies. — Portland Journal. Up at Coquille there has been considerable excitement over tin condition of the city water, owing to the appearanc e of germs that did not seem to be the moat pure, lait the Sentinel «dated last week that the impurities would probably soon be removed and the water again en tirely pure. The water supply of a city is something that demands the most care'til attention, and every in dication of impurities should be ini mediately eradicated. if you know an item of news call us up and tell us about it.
