In those days we had no roads, only trails, w hich at some parts w ere hardly passable for loaded animals, an elk, a deer or a bear could squeeze through, but a pack animal, with a two hundred pound pack on his back, made it difficult ai I at times even dangerous. The w » t 4 place, however, was near tin I : lit v where the schoolhouse now stands at the middle fork of the Coquille river, above Hoffman’s. Here the trail was narrow, on the lower side, a cliff, perhaps a hundred or more feet to the river bed, on the other side a r.early perpendicular rise of the mountains, one misstep and a horse and load would be hurled down never to rise again. Nothing happened on our trip to Camas val ley, there we found the flour which had been delivered at John Day’s we had a pleasant visit with the few inhabitants of this beautiful valley, and the following morning we started on our homeward trio. At John Backwoods, the location is now called “Enchanted Prairie” we stopp'd over night and again re sumed our trip early in the morn ing. With a few minor and un avoidable stops all went well. I believe that justice can best be served in Denver by two sessions of police court each day, the first, where all old offenders are to be tried; and the second session, where first offenders and women shall be tried, and that a woman associate judge be apointed to sit with the pbiice magistrate at the second session of the court. Her recom mendations would only be advisory under our present law, but tliev would have much influence in all de cisions. The presence of a woman as an officer of the court would soften the proceedings, temper justice with mercy, and inspire courage as only a woman can. She could do a good work, by in vestigating, outside the conit, the causes and conditions lead ing to a woman’s ariest, and help untangle domestic or moral wrongs. I recommend th.it we try the experiment and believe good re mits will follow.— Womans Joural. ---- ow----- Dynamite on Car Tracks Philadelphia, Pa., March 24 —While returning from a riot call today the patrol wagon was badlv damaged by dynamite that ex ploded under the vehicle Six policemen, the driver and a seigeant were thrown tifion the street and bruised, it is lielieved the dynamite was placed on the car track by strikers for the purpose of damaging a car and that the patrol wagon figure I in the explosion accidentally, ft is announced that a general met ting of the union men will be held Sunday to consider the advis ability of calling off the general sym pathetic strike.
