Larger and Better, Increase Its Trade and Double the Profits of Its Mer chants— Loafers Cleaned Out. A town tear Des Moines, la.. has beeti making a novel experiment, It has lieen allowing the editor to run things—not the |.«-t)l editor, mind you. but an editor from Des Moines, 'lb.- editor is not running things in |H*rson, but has appointed an assistant who 1« a thoroughgoing businean man. So far the experiment seems to have fieett <i pronounced success. The mer- clt.-i id« are making more money, the col'i- iions are better, the streets are cleaner and there Is improvement in litany lines, The town that is being experimented on is Dexter, which is thirty-five miles from Iles Moines and has about 850 Inhabitants. The editor is AV. J. Pilkington <>f the Merchants* Trade Journal of I >es Moines. Ills assistant is Guy C. Pogue. Pilkington had a theory that the methods found so suc- cessful in tlie department stores and retail establishments of the large cities could be trieti as effectually in the Hitiall towns. He told the merchants of Dexter that he could make more tnotiey for them, the bankers that lie could increase their deposits, and joy ously informed the mayor thnt iti« gov eminent was on tlie blink and it lie tlie editor -could do a little gov erning lie would make things hum an<l itdii to the population. To I'ilkington's jojous surprise. Dex ter took him at his word. The tner chants wanted more profits, tlie bank ers were looking for larger deposits and. as for his honor the mayor, lie concluded that it anybotly could rut that town better than he was doing it the other clittp was welcome to lite job That is the kind ot a mayor to have. No dog in the manger spirit about him! He was tliinking of the good of bis town and did not give a hang for his own dignity. 1 do not know that mayor's name, and 1 am sorry, for it ought to Is* publish ed to the ends of the earth tts an ex ample to a lot of officials in other com munities who tlo nothing themselves and let noboiiy else tlo anything. To return to the experiment, i'il- klngton sent 1'ogue, anti I’ogue got busy. 'File new departure started June 1 anti is to run seven months. Mr. Pogue obtained complete reports from each store anti batik and began intro dueing up to date business methods He took a complete invoice of stock and accounts, ile got sales slips at tin* end ot' each day so that he knew what every store and every depart inent was doing. lie directed the win dow displays, the arrangement of goods, the prices and the conduct of the clerks, lie must be a wonder, for anybody who can regulate the conduct of the average clerk is surely a master of men ami women. Pogue does it, or so it is reported. 1 am not anxious for his job. (tne of tlie best tilings tlie new gen eral manager of Dexter is doing is to write tlie advertisements for tile local patters iiml to i lningc copy with every issue. Even better, lie has graded ami cleaned the streets anti pul down side walk--. He niovt'd tlie loafers off the dry goods Ilexes and moved tile boxes to tlie rear Again. I do not envy him his Job, Im' once more I must admit that lie is a in.irvelous man. Anybody that an mule a loafer move is a ben efactor as vv 'll ns a wonder worker. Pogue has put in new street lights and caused these and tlie ones alreadv in existence to burn later at night. He lias organized a baseball club and a bai'd. Tlie farmets have awakened to the fact that something is astir in Dexter, and as they want to find out what it is they are going to Dexter to trade. Tlie merchants are pleased. They call the Pilkington Pogue idea the booster plan and are rapidly being converted join the boosters’ club.
