60 TO FINISH EUREKA ROAD THIS YEAR GREAT INCREASE IN THE FEAST OF BELSHAZZAR FREIGHT TONNAGE Harriman and Ripley Close Realistic Production of This 100 Mile Gap at a Cost Popular Opera to be Pre of $6,000,000 sented Next Week The Year 1908 Show* Gains Delegate* From the Various Commercial Bodie* of Cooa Dairying and Fruit Growing Over 1907, and 1909 to Date Still Larger RATE OF INGREASE MOST RARO The constant growing import ance of the Coquille river as a sea port is evidenced by the fact that there is a continuous increase in the freight tonnage both in and out, from year to year. This increase has gone on from year to year but the most noticeable has been that of recent years, the 1908 tonnage ex ceeded that of 1907 by a good round sum, and the increase for the first three months of 1909 has been more than correspondingly great, over the same period of 1908. Dur ing the year 1907 the tonnage com ing into this port was 5770 tons, and going out was 54.7’4, making a total of 60,504 tons. For 1908 the incoming freight increased to 6020 tons, the outgoing amounted to 62.- 306, making a total of 68.326. For the first three months of 1909 th« in freight has amounted to 2,036 while the out freight has lieen 17,- 268 tons, making a total of 19,304 tons. If the above rate is kept up for the year, it will bring the tonnage up ckme’to the 80.000 mark, for 1909, and there is every reason to believe -that these figures will be ex ceeded. With a showing of this kind it ought to be easy to convince the authorities at Washington that the Coquille river is and always will be an important factor in the commerce of the Pacific coast and there should be but little difficulty in getting the necessary appropriations for the de velopment of the bar and the river that is necessary to make this the great port that it is destined to be come. Robinson and given for the benefit of the high school piar.o fund, the local singers are again preparing to produce the magnificent dramatic cantata or sacred opera ‘•Belshaz zar’’, to be given in the opera house the last of next week. Mr. Robinson who recently staged the comic opera Pinafore furnishes the costumes and the rehearsals will be conducted each evening in the opera house and a short lesson given the high school students each after noon The opera will be staged and costumed to represent the rich oriental splendor of the court of Belshazzar and the electrical effects representing the "Handwriting-on- the-wall" will be something never before seen in Bandon. The high school students will supply a very enthusiastic chorus and the «olo parts will be selected from among the best singers of the city and a full ca3t and chorus pub lished next week. The music was written by that gifted composer Geo. F. Root and was originally published to be presented in ten scenes, but has been re-arranged by Mr. Robinson into ’five acts for the better pre- sentaticn in the form of an o|>eia — The music as compared with Queen Esther is more harmonious and some of the choruses are equal to the best oratorio choruses—The solos are also of a high order and all who take part in the production of this excellent opera may leel that they are fully repaid for their time and labor in learning such a fine class of music. This should appeal to all lovers of music. ••• • • o • • » o o
