The Royal Blackheath Golf club is the oldest golf club in England, and it also claims to be the oldest existing golf club in the world, It was founded by Janies 1. in 1608. For two or three centuries before that time golf had been a popular game in Scotland, but there is no record of any club having been es tablished prior to the Blackheath club. In 1157 the Scottish parliament Cassed an act enjoining that “fute all and golfe be utterly cryit downe and noeht usit.” A similar act was passed in May, 1491. The Koval and Ancient Golf club at St. Andrews is one of the most famous in the kingdom. It was in stituted in 1751, a silver cup having been played for in May of that year In 1831 William IV. became [intron of the club and approved of its be- . ing in future styled “the Koval and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews” and presented a gold medal to be played for annually. Striking an Average. The children were not allowed in the kitchen, but nobody had ever forbidden their sniffing outside the door to catch the delicious odors which could be obtained by a close application of a small nose to a crack. “Why, Ethel,” said Mrs. Har wood, who discovered them in the entry outside the kitchen door one Sunday morning, “why are you twitching Tommy and slapping him ?” “ ’1 Cause he isn’t playing fair, mother,” said Ethel, “lie’s had five smells and I’ve only had four, and it’s my turn.” “I am, too, playing fair,” asserted Tommy, his utterance smothered as he again applied his nose to the crack. “I’ve got an nwful cold, and I can’t smell half 11s much ns she can I” She Knew. A Washington man, while visiting a friend’s [»lace in Virginia, became much interested in his experiments in fruit culture. One dav the visitor was making the rounds of the place, living in charge of the friend’s young daugh ter of ten, who acted as guide. “This tree seems to lie loaded with apples,” observed the Washing tonian, indicating a particularly fino speri men. “Ye*, sir.” assented the little girl; “father says this is a .good year for apples.” “I am glad to hear that.” said the visitor. “Are all your trees a* full *>f atipli lea ns this one?” “No. , ffir," explained the girl, “Univ the apple, tcoaf’’•-Hxryar’t WYeldj. o BANDON WINE = AND = LIQUOR COMPANY o O o Bandon,Oregon W. Cummings Killed a Lot of Raised a Row. Ads. and When Amu- Cumming* was matt- aging editor of the Yew York Sun, many years a,o.^in important news 6tory came in late one night anti was sent to the composing room with “must" written above it, which meant that on no account must the news be left out of the paper. A few minutes after the copy boy re turned to the editorial rooms and reported that the foreman had said the paper was already overset and that two columns of other news would have to be killed if the “must” story was to get in. Cum mings took the copy from the boy and went himself to the composing room. He demanded an explana tion. The foreman told him that there was a pressure of advertise ments that night ami that they had usurped some of the space usually given to news. “What shall I kill ?” asked the foreman. “Kill two columns of advertise ments and print all the news,” or dered Cummings, and it was done. The next day there was trouble around the Sun office. A hurried meeting of the stockholdnis was called, anti it was a storiR one. Some of the stockholders wanted to have Cummings discharged, but Charles A. Dana stood up for him, and as Dana owned the greater part of the stock his voice was all pow erful. After the meeting Mr. Dana walked out of Ins office and straight to Cummings' desk. He put his hand affectionately on the manag ing editor’s shoulder and said: “Amos, you have my permission to throw out advertisements to make room for the news whenever in v<mr opinion it is tM*'>es«ary.
