Gamblers Must Work. The “move on” order has been issued lor Astoria, and the gamblers' last stand in Oregon will be of brief duration. Gambling is a vice which has a pernicious and blighting effect where ever it is permitted, but the evil is more ap|»arent in some places than in others. It is doubtful if there is another community in the western world where the closing of gambling will be attended with bet ter results than at Astoria. The plea has been made tiiat the fines, collected from the gamblers have paid, in a large measure, the running expences of th« city. But before the gamblers paid these tines, they first secured th«- money, and much more along with it from some hard working wealth creator in Astoria. In no other place in the state where these parasites of the green cloth have essayed to ply their tin lawful vocation have they taken as hard-earned money as that passed over the tables by the fisherman. The fisherman risk their lives to secure th«* money which swells the coffers of the gambling harpies. The abolution of gambling will not only remove temptation from hun- dreds of hard working men, who need the money for other purposes, and from young men just growing and easily influenced, but it will un doubtedly be the means of forcing reformation on a large number of gamblers, who, when they find their occupation gone, will be willing to turn their attention to some res pectable method of securing a livelihood. When Astoria is run ning “wide open" in the fishing sea son, there are more than 100 gain biers engag«xl in fleecing the victims As gamblers are a class of liberal spenders, five dollars per «lay would be a modest estimate of their daily expenditures. Reduced to mathe matics, it thus appears that Astoria in «xinsideration of a moderate monthly fine, has permitted these parasites to rob some of the citizens of $500 per day, or approximately $15,000 per month. When the li«l drops next week these lily-fingered drones in the industrial hive, no longer will be permitted to rob the men who earn the money, and it will be placed in circulation where it can be of more benefit. While it is true that Oregon never had less use for gamblers than it has at the present time, it is equally true that the state was never before so badly in need of able-bodied men for all kinds of work. The present crusade will leave without a calling, several hundred gamblers. Among them there will be undoubtedly a large number, who, in the absence of an opportunity to rob their fellow men may be induced to go to work, and in time become honorable citizens. The gambler never creates one penny by his efforts. He simply lives as do all parasite, off the en ergy and vitality of others, it is natural to presume that he will be come a producer. Those who are too lazy or dishonest to go to work in due season will find their way to our penal institutions. Even there it may be better for society to sup port them behind the bars, than per mit them to levy their own toll on the workers, and while so doing to corrupt the morals of the young. which is now expected. used bad judgement. Somebody Quite a lot of wool has been de livered at Port Orford lately to be shipped to San Francisco purchasers who have paid as high as 23% cents. With such a price for wool, and f>. 4 for mutton, and $3.25 an«l $3.50 for stock sheep it has been our liest year for ffock masters. A. A. Jamison was in town Mon- day. He has been suffering of late with rheumatism, resulting no doubt from his exposures last winter in teaming for the Wireless station. 1 le left here with his team this morning for Coquille City, taking uj i Mr. Jurgensen Sr. for examination tor commitment to the Asylum, as 1 hopeless paralytic. The steamer Signal, Captain Saun ders. left Port Orford last Friday fternoon. for San Pedro, Cal. with a cargo of 400,000 feet of Well-seas oned oak ami myrtle hard wood, by long odds the most valuable cargo of lumber ever shipped from South- Western ( )regon. The parties that own this lumber will not sell it, but will manufacture it into furniture, and they expect to make arrange ments to take a similar amount, or more, every year from the shipping points of Curry County, which are the only ones on Oregon’s coast where this quality of oak can be obtained, as it does not grow' in mercantile quanties. “The doctor was in church. He occupied a front pew. The church was crowded, the preacher preach ing eloquently; a ¡»erfecl silence reigned. “But suddenly a man dashed in at the door. He held up his hand for the preacher to pause. Then he cried; “Is Dr. Henry Smith here?" “With all eyes centered upon him. Dr. Henry Smith rose slow ly in his s *at and turned round. “What is wanted?" he said, He had the grave, weary air of a man who is almost overburdened with the responsibilities heaped upon him. “Are you Dr. Henry Smith?" “I am.” “ ‘Well, doctor, J am Cache Co.
