This won’t last so very long either, as we at> .lrcady figuring on making it eight pages every week. Bandon, and all of her various lines of business, is gi awing, and why shouldn’t its newspaper? TI ie H aywood T rial continues to hold the boards against all comers. With such men as John Nugent for the defence, the State does not seem to stand much of a show for convic tion. Sentimental Darrow and others who have the case for the State in charge are sadly lacking in the out spoken and plainly stated facts of the case, and are making their side decidedly weak. 1 hat Haywood might be implicated in tin assassination of I*rank Steunenberg is a possibility, but so far nothing lias been proven, and the general outlook for acquital is very favorable for the prisoner. C hicken R anches are and have been recognized as being a good money investment for this country, for a long time Eggs are as scarce as the proverbial hen’s teeth, and there is hardly a store in Bandon that cannot handle five and ten times the number now on the market. The meat markets have experienced «•very possible difficulty in securing desirable poultry for their purpose, ami at the present existing prices, and the certainty <>f a large figure for the hen fruit in the winter time, the proposition is hardly a business ven ture, but a certainty. There is any amount of land for sale for this pur pose that would make ideal chicken ram lies, and the price that it is now held at is very reasonable. T oday I s T he Nation’s Birth- day, ami let every one of us unfuil all of the available flags, inspire the patriotism of tin- younger element by providing them with fireworks, and >urselves attend the exercises with the true American spirit. With all if the peace and prosperity that we ire now enjoying, anil the brilliant prosjMcts fora prosperous future, we all should take some part in observ- ng the greatest day in all the year. One hundred and thirty one years igo today our forefathers made a lation that will stand as long as the vorld exists, one that from the first has enjoyed the liberty and freedom of speech and action, and lias in no •vay had to bow before sovereignty ■if any description. Even in the darkest hour they stood together as • >nc, and now in the time of peace and prosperity, we should pay onr highest tribute to their memory, Let all pull iugether this day and make a celebrati« >n that w ill excel ill before it in this vii init \ Tin I mprov i mi x is proposed by the city, and given in detail in mother column, h ive been needed lor a long time past, and the new ity dads have taken the right course to bring a speedy fate to several tripes of bad sidewalk, and to event ually open up several much needed streets. There tire sidewalks in Bandon that would serve for some time to come if they were properly- nailed down, but it is just such walks that the city dads will get their eagle «.■yes upon and order new ones built. Get out your hammer and mills and do a little along the improvement line yourself. Now that we have the town cleaned up. why wouldn't it be a good idea to paint up? There are a number of buildings in Bandon ...................... s-................... that have ;i 1 disreputable appearance, t hat a little paint, properly applie«!, would do wonders for. This is not going to be money thrown away, Your property will be benefitted, anil the whole general appearance of the town will give a much better im pression to the man who wants to locate. It will only place that mud more value on your propertv. "T rust B usting " has been the platform of all parties for the past several years, and let’s see what has been accomplished. This will apply not only to the National administra tion, but to tin State political bodies. I'or instance, the coal trust. The common man is burdened enough with the old prices that formerly made that article almost a luxury, while now, after the trust lias been supposed to be "busted," the price lias soared way out of sight. The most of this essential commodity comes from Pennsylvania and is sent ill over the United States to the millions of consumers who are de pendent on it for their winter's fuel. The West has its own coal mines, chiefly of the bituminous variety, and knows little of the methods of the Trust, which docs its operating in the more thickly settled East. 1 he railroads have obtained control of the output of the mines, which they regulate to suit themselves and prices. Their employees work at starvation wages, and should they strike, they could not better them selves, as lias been shown by recent strikes in the coal regions. The big trust would only close their mines, and the countless miners would have no employment, and the comliton of affairs would soon be even more de plorable than it now is. An admin istration is needed that will "bust" the trust. It is a righteous move ment and will bring untold relief to millions. Club in the evening. All Oregon is indebted to Mr A. L. Craig, Passengei 1 ratti Manager of the Great Northern Railway tor publicity given this State in many of the leading papers of the country. including those of New York, St Louis, and other great cities. Mr. Craig feels that the $5,000 prize otter if the Portland Commercial Club hould result in an enormous adver tisement for the State. Vice President Fairbanks will be the guest of tin Astoria Chambea of • .’omnierce July 15th, with banquet at Seaside. Portland Business men have in contemplation an excursion covering about twenty-five points in North Western Washington fuly 24th-;Stli. It is consensus of opinion among the best advised grain men that the wheat crop of the present year will leave in the hands of the farmers of the Pacific Northwest from $35,000, <>00 to $40,000,000, assuting go« 1(1 times. Large delegations will go from < fregón to attend the Christian deavor Convention at Seattle, National Educational Association Convention at Los Angeles, and the Baptist Young People’s Conven tion at Spokane, and all should bear in mind that every ticket is good to any railroad point in Oregon. Judging from advance preparations being made by the different deleg ations, they will do a great work in advertising the resources of this State. Good reports are being received from all the fruit sections of Oregon. The crop is satisfactory, the prices are good at the present time and the prospects for the Fall fruit crop are the brightest in the history of the State.
