On Tut*d»y last Mr. Orville Dodge of the Coquille Valley Seutiuel visited Bandon for tbe fir»t time since bis return from W asbington where be wm »ent by tbe Coquille River towns to work in the interest of an appro p iation by Congress for tbe further i uprovement of the Coquille River Harbor. It wa» well kuowu to our citizens that Mr Dodge bad been sue cessful in hi» efforts beyond tbe ex pectations of those who sent him, and even him»elf. It was but uatural that our citizens should give to him a hearty welcome and show souieappre ciation of the value of bis services. Mr. Dodge was accompanied by Col 1). S. Ccrser, of New Hampshire, who rendered material assistance to Mr. Dodge in bis work in Washington. The coming of these gentlemen was not previously kuowu, and it was only after their arrival on the noou boat that our people were apprised of tbe fact An impromptu meeting was held in the evening attended by a goodly number of represetua ive business and professional men. Brief addresses were made by Mr. Dodge and Co) Corser. It became more and more apparent as the explanations were made that but for our represen tative and tbe information furnished by him to tbe Chief Engineer of the United States, that the appropriation of $60,000 would not have been made. One fact of interest to our people developed during tbe meeting, is that the Coquille River is second to tbe Columbia only m tbe State of Oregon in its output of lumber. This fact, when brought to the attention of the chief engineer indneed him to increase the amount recommended for this harbor, without which it would have been impossible to secure tbe appro priation. Their remarks wore enthusiastically received by tbe audience and tbe gen tiemen accorded a warm and hearty reception. Short addresses were then made by Col. R H. Rosa, G. P. Top p ng. and T. B. Wheeler. After ex tending to Mr. Dodge and Col. Corser a vote of thanks in appreciation of their good work done in tbe interest of tbe Coquille Valley and Coos County, tbe meeting adjourned.
