From Casper, Via Boise to
Coos Bay.
The Burlington will build to Coot
Bay. This was tbe statement made
to tbe representative of the Harbor at
Boise, Idaho, by Judge J. H. Rich­
ards at tbe time of tbe irrigation con­
gress. Mr. Richards is president of
tbe national miuiog congress.
Mr. Richards said tbat be bad just
returned from a railroad trip aod tbat
on tbe train wae tbe chief engineer of
the Burlington. Tbe engineer stated
tbat hie road intended to extend to
Coos Bay. Thia was a positive declar­
ation aod announced as a settled fact.
Tbe statement that Coos Bay wbb to
be tbe ocean terminus was equally
positive.
Judge Richards was firm in bis be­
lief tbat tbe Burlington intends to
. build west via Boise to Coos Bay.
Tbe present western terminus is at
Casper, Wyoming. Caspar is almost
due east of Coos Bay, The shortest
and best route to tbe ocean is atCooe
Bay. Therefore we cau well believe
tbat the Burlington bas planned to
make our port its Pacific terminus.
Tbe Burlington is controlled by
Jim Hill. It baa loog been apparent
tbat Hill designed to seek an outlet
to Coon Bay. Hie speech at Portland
last year when be said he hoped some­
day to look further south was an in
timation to this effect.
It is tbe assurance tbat we can get
a deep water harbor tbat is attracting
tbe attention of transcontinental rail­
roads and more tbao one line will
build when tbe improvement becomes
a reality. It will be a great day for
Oregon when the Burlington reaches
Cooe Bay.—Harbor,

Grants Pass, Or.. Sept. 17.—It has
been determined by competent en
gineers, who were employed by the
Grants Pass Commercial club, tbat
Rogue river, between Grant Pass and
tbe point of its confluence with tbe
Illinois, is not navigable, even with
flatboats or bargee. The investiga
tion was made in tbe hope tbat some
means might be used to employ the
river in transporting heavy mining
machinery from here to tbe mines of
tbe lower Rogue district, thus obvi­
ating the expensive and tedious
method of carrying tbe ponderous
equipment over tbe mountains from
West Fork by pack pooy.
But the engineers, after making a
thorough survey, declare tbe old
Rogue cannot be navigated. In truth,
it has been tried, with disastrous re­
sults. time aod agaio, but tbe ac­
cidents were always thought to be
tbe fault of tbe navigators themselves.
Even log rafts cannot be successfully
floated or run down the river because
of its treacherous current. Tbe pro­
truding rocks, swift correct, rapids,
cataracts and falls make tbe Rogue a
terror to all manner of craft, and tbe
engineers report tbat it could not be
cleared sufficiently to allow even a
barge to go down it in safety, with­
out an euormous expense, as much of
tbe channel would have to be blasted
clear of obstructions.

The steamer Alliance will hereafter
ply only between Coos Bay and Port
land, leaving Coos Bay Wednesday,
and returning, leave Portland every

It is reported that Sudden A Chris­
tensen will build a ship-yard at Pros­
per and soon commence work on an
other new vessel. E. T. Kruse will
also build another steam schooner
about the size of the Elizabeth for
the Coquille trade. The Casco which
wae recently launched at Marshfield
for the Coqnille trade will probably
not run here as the vessel draws too
much water.
Two indictments were returned in
the circuit court against two North
Bend saloon keepers for allowing
gambling in their places Tbe com­
plaints were made so late tbat the
cases could not be tried at thia term
of court, and tbe defendants gave

the next term.
